What's the deal with AMD CPUs? Any help?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm looking into building a new computer and noticed how cheap AMD CPUs are vs Intel CPUs, particularly the six-core models. I know close to nothing about AMD CPUs, and was hoping someone could help me out.

Regarding the 3.2GHz AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Thuban and the Intel Core i7-980X 3.33GHz (both 6-core):

What's the difference?
  1. Does the AMD offer hyper-threading, if so, does it perform as well?
  2. Does the AMD have some kind of turbo boost, if so, how high does it go?
  3. Will it run cooler, hotter, or about the same as the Intel?
  4. Does it offer about the same performance with similar clock speeds?
  5. Does this CPU only support 1066MHz/1333MHz dual channel RAM?

And I'm curious if the only difference between that AMD 6-core CPU and this AMD Phenom II X4 965 (4-core) CPU, is just two cores less, or are there architectural differences?

Thanks, appreciate any help!

(PS: When's bulldozer coming out, will it have a quad-core or six-core model?)

  1. Does the AMD offer hyper-threading, if so, does it perform as well? No
  2. Does the AMD have some kind of turbo boost, if so, how high does it go? Yes
  3. Will it run cooler, hotter, or about the same as the Intel? AMD will run cooler
  4. Does it offer about the same performance with similar clock speeds? Not as fast, but difference will be negligible for single card systems for gaming.
  5. Does this CPU only support 1066MHz/1333MHz dual channel RAM?
There's no advantage to triple channel other than synthetic benchmarking.

And I'm curious if the only difference between that AMD 6-core CPU and this AMD Phenom II X4 965 (4-core) CPU, is just two cores less, or are there architectural differences?
Thuban is different than Deneb.

1. Nope.
2. Yes. It's called Turbo core, and what it does is when your running something (like a game) that only uses a couple cores, it runs those heavily used ones at higher speed and shifts some of the power off of the unused cores.
3. Cooler
4. Almost. Depends on what. Some games favor intel and vice versa
5. Oh hell no, I run my phenom 560 ram at 1440 from 1333. I don't think you will ever run out of clock speed, your ram will become unstable way before that.

Bulldozer.......oh boy

there will be 8 and 16 core models, not sure about quad or hex.

Does the AMD offer hyper-threading, if so, does it perform as well?
no. AMD does not have hyper-threading.
Does the AMD have some kind of turbo boost, if so, how high does it go?
yes. it goes as high as 400mhz. you can set it at any clock you want
Will it run cooler, hotter, or about the same as the Intel?
they will run cooler
Does it offer about the same performance with similar clock speeds?
they are slower clock for clock than intel but no way they are terrible processors.
Does this CPU only support 1066MHz/1333MHz dual channel RAM?
they officially support upto 1600mhz but ofcourse you can definitely go higher than that with overclocking

thuban and deneb is basically the same. just 2 additional cores but with better IMC, cooler temps even though having more cores and they overclock better

Essentially the 6 core is the same just with 2 extra cores thrown in. Architecture wise AMD hasn't actually changed drastically over the past 4 years. It won't be until Bulldozer that there is a new architecture.

They're still rocking 4 year+ old technology, just making revisions with the time (adding DDR3 or more cores, or just fine tuning).

The first two posts have the rest spot on though.

1) No

2) Yes. All the hexa-core processors have it. The 1100T goes to 3.7ghz, the 1090T goes to 3.6ghz...etc

3) Depends on your cooling.

4) No. At the same clock speed, the Intel processor will be faster. The prices reflect this somewhat. (As in the more expensive processor is faster. However, the difference in performance isn't really $800's worth.)

5) It can go higher than 1333Mhz

Sweet guys! This sounds brilliant!

So the six-core actually runs cooler than the quad-core? I'm into that then!

EDIT: Do the AMD mobos support SLI or only CF?

Does the AMD offer hyper-threading, if so, does it perform as well?
-no

Does the AMD have some kind of turbo boost, if so, how high does it go?
-yes, it is called turbo core. I believe the 1090T goes to 3.6

Will it run cooler, hotter, or about the same as the Intel?
-same pretty much.

Does it offer about the same performance with similar clock speeds?
-no, the 980x kills the Thuban

Does this CPU only support 1066MHz/1333MHz dual channel RAM?
-Officially, yes. Will it run 2000 and beyond? yes.

The vast majority of AMD boards are CF only. There are some that support SLI but they are few in number.
