Static shock on headphone jack killed computer

Well... Temporarily at least.

You see, I was unplugging my keyboard (it stopped responding - does that sometimes), and my finger brushed against the headphone jack. I got a shock, and the screen went blank, the mouse and keyboard lights tuned off. The fans and LEDs and stuff stayed on, but it was clear that nothing was being processed or displayed.

This scared the crap out of me. I turned off the power supply. An hour later, I got up he courage to turn it back on.

It worked fine, and has been working fine with no visible problems for about 6-7 hours (folding).

The headphone jack on the front may or may not work, I don't actually use that one, and I haven't tested it. It is connected directly to the motherboard with a cable marked HDA. The sound still works as it normally does, at least on the back panel ports.

Any thoughts on this incident? Something like this happen to you before? Do you think it will continue to operate normally?

Wait. Does your keyboard have a headphone jack a la Lycosa? I'm shorting the unused jack that is supposed to plug into the computer off my keyboard right now and nothings happened. please explain how you did this.

The USB and audio jacks on the front of my antec 900 are next to each other. My finger touched the headphone jack on the case.

This happened to me when I had my Antec 900. The USB and audio jacks were not grounded properly and the computer will shut off sometimes if I plugged anything into the front jacks. The only way that I fixed it was to ground myself by touching the metal side of the case before plugging anything in. My computer was shut off many times from this and it caused no problems so far.

The front panel jacks on a lot of cases and more frequently your Antec 900 are notorious for poor quality.

I have a good friend whose front panels jacks were dead in a matter of weeks, another who has similar static problems like you, and another who completely burned out two headphones using them. I'd avoid using them, especially on an Antec 900 case.

They're just bad, sorry to say...

You're PC should be pretty safe. I have the same issue as well cause i'm using a garbage of a case. I was so freaking scared the first time it happened. But I just grounded myself first by touching the metal part of my case before unplugging anything. Cheers xD

Thanks for the replies people.

I was so freaked out LOL. I was thinking "Oh crap; did I just destroy an $900 machine in a matter of seconds? Not to mention the $4000 amplifier and the $8000 plasma TV."

Good to know that it should be fine.
