TA790GXB3 Hexacore CPU Support?

Thread Starter
I was wondering if anyone knew if my TA790GXB3 would support a Phenom II 1055T(Hexacore).

TA790GXB3

I've read some places that it does, other places that it doesn't, and some say you just need a BIOS update. I was hoping someone could help clear things up for me.

Thanks.

It does not appear to support that CPU no frown.gif
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/cpu_support.php?S_ID=428

I really dont see why it doesn't tho...
Might be some unofficial bios that allows the chips.. Or perhaps their latest bios supports them but its not listed.. (Very Unlikely)

EDIT: I see one reason it would be a bad idea, that board has 4+1 Phase power for the cpu.. 4 phase and x6 cores = well , Just dont do it.

See that is where my confusion starts. Biostar's SME website states the opposite. See here.

Most likely it is that Thuban needs dual power plane-which is more uncommon for older AMD boards to have. In any case, with so few power phases and no MOSFET cooling, OCing is not a good idea.

Either way. I would not recommend that board to push a x6.. No mosfet cooling, 4 phase, it just doesn't bode well for your board . If you go for it, DON'T TRY OVERCLOCKING IT..

Yeah man you have a really killer gaming rig bro..
An x6 would net you exactly 0 more FPS in most games.. Tottaly not worth it.
That money would be much better spent on A. A SSD, and or B. Some aftermarket CPU cooler action..
Overclock that cpu son.. And try to unlock it to a quad core while your at it wink.gif

You could always contact Biostar support for a direct answer to your question. I have the same board as you do but I would be very hesitant to throw an X6 on it even if it were possible to do so. It is a decent board but might struggle with an X6. A 965 would be a better choice.

I know that some people have been running the X6s on the TA890FXE board.

Capwn hit the nail on the head here. That board has 4+2 or 4+1 power phase (very difficult to see for sure). Which means in all honesty, you SHOULD only be using a 95w CPU on it at most. I would avoid putting any better of a CPU in that board at all.

Even if Biostar does officially support it (which they don't), its still a very bad idea on that board, with that power phase setup.

Not true. The board does support 125W CPUs. Just check the CPU support list. But you always have to know the limitations of a board and respect those limits. I wouldn't put an X6 on it even if it were possible. I would put a 965 on it but probably not OC it too much and would probably run on stock voltage (Vcore). I am running an unlocked X2 545 (started as an 80W CPU) and it is OC'd up to 3.37. And I am experiencing no issues with that setup. So one should always use caution while OC'ing a quad on this board but that does not mean that it isn't possible. It simply means that you probably shouldn't push too hard or too far.

If I had listened to some of the naysayers around here I might just be running an X2 at 3.0. I didn't and I am running an X4 at 3.37. So caution is necessary and prudent but it shouldn't stop a person from running a quad on 4 phase. No smoke or fires here.
