I vote
555 if you dont absolutely have to have 2 extra cores for any programs or games.

I was thinking getting a 555, but I had to have the extra cores for Bad company 2, so i would be screwed if i didn't get the core unlock.

I have an unlocked Phenom II x2 555. It was unlocked to x4.

I have two friends who have also had the same cpus.

One was able to unlock all four cores. The other friend had it unlocked to 4 cores as well but one of the cores was weak and would become unstable if it got too hot (summer time, ambient temperature would rise)

I would make sure you understand the chances of success and to weigh the risk involved vs. performance that can be gained.

My chip was able to unlock to 4 cores but does rather weakly in overclocking. I get 3.7Ghz at freakin' 1.47Volts... :[ I am using an mATX with some weak overclocking abilities from what I read online.

~1.50 is absolute highest.

Other people that I have research have gotten their chips above 4GHz with around 1.5volts..

*Note: you need a special core unlocking motherboard for the chance to unlock the 555.

well i have no idea how to unlock all 4 cores safely nor do i kno how to overclock anything. i am a newbie

are there any guides that show you step by step for unlocking and overclocking this processor?

why would you choose this over the 965?

a lot of people seem to have been able to unlock those 555s. Also, I they they sometimes come in the superior C3 revision (i think). It's your pick. They're both great cpus!

how do i unlock the 555 and over clock it
post #10 of 13
right now, do not expect to unlock a 555 as i feel that those days are over. i had THREE 555s not too long ago in my possession and none of them unlocked. not even a single core. other people who recently picked up a 555 on the boards have similar experiences. so you are asking basically quadcore vs dual core, with a remote chance of a core or two unlocking. it depends but most people here (after all this is a performance board) will say go for the quadcore. i have a quad and a dualcore and i'm using my 555 dual core right now. it plays starcraft 2 and borderlands just fine. if i didn't check cpu-z i wouldn't even be able to tell the difference as far as dual or quad. just throwing that out there.

oh yeah, all three of the 555s were C3.
