Can I use this as a folding pc?

Thread Starter
My old pc is sitting around collecting dust. It's got a Intel Quad 2@ 2.4ghz. I was thinking of converting it into a folding rig only via GPU. Will this processor work good with a GTX 260, or will there be some bottle neck due to the CPU

A quad is still rather good not sure why you leaving it in the dust like that, glad you asked now.

The quad (i assume q6600) with the 260 can get you around 10k PPD if I am not mistaken.
Bottle neck really isn't an issue unless you have a folding farm.

MY question is, why would you use a Phenom II x4 over a Core 2 Quad?

Because the Phenom II is clock for clock slightly faster than the Kentsfield C2Q's. They also tend to clock higher than the Q6600 usually does.

And I've ran 3 GPU's at once in my sig rig folding. CPU usage was at 5%. That tells me even any dual core processor will not bottleneck a GPU farm.

Nah, you're pretty hardpressed to actually bottleneck a GPU while folding, unless you're on like a PIII or something. But, in that case, why are you even trying? I'd totally put a 580 in my PIII rig, by the way

Anyhow, the 6600 should get about 3 or 4, and the 260, considering it's a 216, will get 8-9, so it would be a good addition to your equipment.

Might as well overclock it a little bit while you're at it.
