Aquatuning, import...

Thread Starter
Not sure where else to post this, but i'll try here.

Basically, I ordered some watercooling equipment from Aquatuning in Germany, and they shipped it to me in norway. the price was 466€ total. now, about 3 weeks later I get a Bill from UPS regarding VAT, and the price is 134€?! mad.gif

I called them and they said it was VAT for import to country outside of EU countries, but isnt VAT only for import to countries who are members of EU?
Norway is not...

Ermm...

As far as I know, Norway is inside the European Union, isnt it?

If so, you should not be paying any extra customs or anything...

its in Europe, but not part of the European Union.

I called the Customs, and they said I have to pay taxes on 25% of the sum I payed for the products. I hate this, was saving for 3 monitors and a 2nd Gfx card mad.gif

Oh, I thought Norway was part of the EU.

Then you should either return the package, ask for a refund, buy the stuff in Norway, or live with it and pay the taxes/fees they're asking for.

If you would have ordered it to my country in Spain for example, there wouldn't be any extra cash to pay needed.

Sucks, but they're right frown.gif

Sorry I couldn't help you any more frown.gif

Hmm... that may be an in theory. If I order something from outside the EU and it's marked as a gift, then whether you actually have to pay import duties is really down to luck. I believe they check less than 10% of gift marked parcels for business goods.

If however, it's coming from a business, then they will most likely mark it down as a purchased item which will incur import duties. If they marked it as a gift they would be committing a crime. I bought my SSD from the US and had the seller wrap it in birthday paper so it looked like a present in case they checked tongue.gif

Not sure about Norway, but in germany you only get charged taxes on customs if the price is above 45€, in Spain it is 22€. So you might not get charged at all for that 2nd package, who knows.

Join the EU, but not the Euro (€). You get a more stable currency (albeit less competitive) and the advantages of free trading.

There is a minimum value required to tax I believe. I think it's like ~£30 here.

Let me clear something and explain what you have to pay and how, cause i have been in such situations many times.
First you buy something from somewhere (Aquatuning) inside or outside of EU or other country. You pay XXXX Euro/dollars/GBP etc..
Then after a week you should receive your purchased items and here is the tricky part:
1) First case ---- Your country is part of the EU and you purchase something within the EU.
The item will arrive at your doorstep without any additional fees.
2) Second case ---- (your case). Your country is not part of EU and you purchase something from EU or US, or somewhere else. This applies and if your country is in the EU but you purchase items outside the EU borders.

Then the item has two options to appear:

Number 1)
You receive a note that you have to go to the customs office to take your item and there you have to pay all the necessary taxes (VAT, Customs fees, etc.) VAT is a tax for every country and every country has a percentage for it. In Bulgaria it is 20% on the value of the item, in Germany is 17% (or 19% not sure). And this value is always payed if you have item shipped to you outside of your country and merchant region. Then after this VAT - you pay the customs fees which are specific for every country, and after all those things are payed you're ready to take your item home.

Number 2)
You receive your item at your doorstep (as you) and after a week or two you receive a note that you have to pay the VAT and other taxes because the delivery agency have payed them for you and you own them those taxes as the ones in Number 1 case.

There are cases in which the items can be marked as a gift not exceeding certain values which are different for every country and then you might not have to pay anything.

I will give you an example to see how this system works with my country:
When i buy something from within EU - i receive it at my doorstep or in the local post office without the need to pay something.
BUT:
If i buy something from outside the EU (US or China or Antarctica) then:
If its under 1kg and below 40$ and marked as a gift i receive it at the local post office without paying.
But if some of these rules above are not ok - them - i receive a small "beautiful" paper saying i have to go down to the customs office to pay taxes. Then i have to pay 20% (VAT) on the declared value of the items - for 40$ its 8$ and have to pay additional 5$ customs taxes and after that i can take the item. Sometime they might tell you to open and see whether the item you buy is the same as the one in the box ( to check if you are not lying to them tongue.gif with the item and the value ).

These are the basic things you need to know when purchasing something outside you country - always check how much you will pay when it arrives.

Hope it helps.
