Is it safe to pass 1.5v on air?

Thread Starter
Ok i know it may sound like a noob question and i know the safe voltage for air cooling is 1.5v but here is the thing, even at 1.55v my cpu core temp never passes 36c under full load.

Now back to my question can i pass 1.5v and push into 1.6v ranges or will i damage my chip...or can i increase the voltages just once i keep my temps in check?

It depends what tempature you get, Give it a go and see what temps you get when you get it to full load

If you are seriously running 36°C at full load @ 1.5 Vcore, you're definitely going to hit a voltage barrier before you come close to a thermal barrier. 1.6V+ seems pretty high, and if you plan on running that voltage 24x7, you're bound to shorten the life of your chip.

Nah i'm not going to run it 24/7 at 1.6volts i really just want to see if i can get to 4.6ghz which is not possible with 1.55v the highest with that voltage is 4.5ghz...I just want to know what the chip is really capable of, i'm happy with the performance i get right now out of the chip.

Bad news...and good news, bad news is that 4.6ghz does not seem possible even with 1.65v...on the upside, even at those high voltages the cpu idle temp was 39c, not bad i would say but i'm not going to send more volts through the cpu.

Well i guess there is something to be learned here...a phenom II 555 C3 chip coupled with a hyper 212+ can withstand 1.65v and be relatively cool, at idle temps at least.

Ambient temps are hard to tell here...in the caribbean it may feel like 33c in a room but actually the high humidity makes it feel worst than it is, so the room may actually be 29 or 30c but feels like 35c but on average i would say the room is at 30c.

The room is air conditioned though so when ever it gets too hot i just flip the ac on.

So all in all my temps would vary between the different times in the day but so far at 1.5v i have yet to see more that 40c in core temps and that was when the room had me sweating as if i were in the gym.

You must have one hell of a chip, or one lucky break with your thermal paste. What kind are you using? Are those aftermarket fans on your 212+? Those temps are simply unbelievable.

I use OCZ freeze and its the stock fans 2x blademasters. I did cram extra TIM into the creases of the hyper 212+ so maybe it makes a difference to do that.
