New Nvidia GTX 440 - good card for Physx you think?

Thread Starter
New EVGA Nvidia GT 440 card. I've not decided if I want to SLI my GTX 580 or go with a second card for Physx. I'm assuming this would be a good second card for Physx? Or should I go with a higher card like GT 460 now that prices have come down?

Qoute from EVGA:

I feel like it might be a bit slow for some newer titles as a physx card. A 450 would be a better choice in my honest opinion.

Thing to keep in mid is that the shader count between the 430 and 440 is the same. Had the 440 been the same as the oem version then yes it would be a good card. Unfortunately Nvidia did a rebrand instead of releasing a new card with a different shader count.

It all comes down to price. GT440 is basically a OC GT430.

U need atleast a 470 for phys-x..jk! It wont be enough for todays and future games. Just look at mafia 2. It needs a lot of juice.

Get another 580 for SLI. Physx cards are more about vanity half the time rather than usefulness. Mostly because so few games really utilize them. A lot of people acquire a Physx card when upgrading all their other cards. For example me retaining a 470 when I go to 580 SLI.

A GTS450 is the sweet spot for physx processing. If the price is too step, I'd go for a GT430. GDDR5 won't benefit you in any way and you can overclock the GT430 if you so desire.

Aside from increased clocks and optional GDDR5, the GT440 doesn't offer any additional processing power whatsoever. I'm still pretty mad about this release tongue.gif

Linus Tech tips found that a GTX480 + a GTS450 for physx gave you 50% more fps.

Mafia II doesnt even max out my 240 all the time...however the 440's are slower than the 240's.

The 440's are not good for physx. They are really weak. a single slot gts 450 would be the way to go. Thats actually what im upgrading to soon. my gt 240 is on the fritz =/ she was a good card.

Actually he said 25% for Physx enabled games.

Today I look at the value of using a GTS 450 as a dedicated PhysX card in conjunction with a GTX 480. Honestly it performs admirably well, allowing the 480 to perform up to 25% better in PhysX enabled games!

I've seen an equal number of tests showing an awesome benefit, some benefits, and no benefits. But in the OP's case 580 SLI is ALWAYS greater than 580 + 440/450 Physx as scaling has to be better than 25% at least.

Will a physX card work in a pci-e 8x slot? I have one of those dell x58 motherboards, which only include (1) Pci-e x16, instead of two. ( i kno, wth, right?)
