AMD Gaming Build for 1k

Thread Starter
I was after a fairly high end build for a mid range price with a monitor.

Here is what I have so far:
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB 7-9-7-24
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB
ASUS Black 24X DVD+R
Noctua NH-D14
XFX Radeon HD 6950
Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous
Acer S231HLbid Black 23" 5ms HDMI LED

I think the mobo/cpu combo are great, the memory I have heard nothing but excellent things about (high frequency, low timings), the GPU speaks for itself (plus the 6970 BIOS flash), the monitor is a LED.

I know I am missing a case, but Micro Center has the cases that I want for a little cheaper and it's only about 20 minutes from me.
Considering either a HAF case or the AZZA Hurrican.

4 Questions here -

1. Will the Noctua fit in to the Azza Hurrican case?
2. Would you reccomend this GPU vs a 560 with Twin Frozr (I will OC either one)?
3. Would it make -that- much of a difference if I went ahead and bought a 64GB SSD drive for a boot drive?
4. Is this PSU enough for this set up? Even if I get a SSD drive ontop of the HDD for a boot drive?

From what i've heard a SSD does not make a big difference other than load times, may i suggest 2 500gig hdd's and then put them into RAID0 some say that gives a 30% increase in performance.

The noctua cooler is pretty big, but what are your intentions? A crazy overclock or something mild? cause i can tell you that my 555 dual core even at stock speeds plays all games well...so you can scrap the noctua and get the hyper 212+ and put more money into a higher end gpu...power supply seems good, 3 12v rails all averaging 22amps on each would be enough to run even power monger graphics cards, maybe just get a PSU that has 700watts so you will be a bit future proof.

Why not go with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ for the heatsink? It's way cheaper than the Noctua, and performs quite admirably, especially with two fans in push/pull.

I can't comment much on the 6950. Reviews I have read said that it is great, but I'm not sure on different models.

I would absolutely recommend a boot drive. 64GB is plenty if you stay on top of uninstalling games/apps you aren't using. I have a Kingston V-Series and I love it. I think OCZs are on sale on the 'Egg right now.

Your PSU should be good for now. If you ever want to Xfire, it might be skimpy, although I am not sure what the wattage requirement of the 6950 is. As a refeference, I have 2X5770 on a 600W.

Looks pretty good.

I the noctua will be fine, but thats a kinda crappy case. I would recommend a corsair case or antec case

I would take the 6950 any day over the 560. It will destroy it, especially with the bios flash

I would highly recommend a c300 64gb drive. it will be extremely helpful. unless you can't afford it, it will make your computer feel twice as snappy

As for the PSU, it's a little on the small side for an OCed 6970, so I would recommend stepping up to a 650w, or maybe even a 750w if you want to be safe

Thanks for all the responses up top, rep will be given.

As for the OCing...
I plan on pushing the GPU just a little bit higher after the 6970 BIOS flash.
The CPU will probably be looking @ around 4GHZ, which would be iffy with the 212 if I am not mistaken.

As for the case... I may be a bit of a ricer, but from what I have read the airflow in that case is phenomenal, the only other's that I have considered are the NZXT Phantom and the 932 HAF. The case needs to stay around 140 bucks.

If your going for 4ghz yea the noctua will be good or you can look at the thermalright silver arrow, as for the case i think it should fit in the HAF 932 a buddy of mine has the 922 and it seems pretty huge

4Ghz on the 212+ is a tad iffy. Really depends on the chip, your airflow, and the ambient temps. If you leave your NB alone, you could probably swing it, but what's the point in that?

I looked at the Silver Arrow as well and for some odd reason I just like the Noctua more... Correct me if I am wrong, but the silver arrow is also a tad bit higher and about 20 bucks more expensive right now for 0-2C differences.

Figured it would be iffy on a 212, thats why I stuck with the Noctua.
Ambient Temps are normally around 60-70F, so normal room temperature.
As for airflow, that's one thing that I am still struggling with...
Looking for a case that will accommodate the NHD14 and provide solid cable management for under 150 bucks.

I am open to suggestions of course.

One concern about the Noctua is RAM height, but by the looks of it, you should be golden.

Here's another thought...

Go with with the 975 for an extra $20, and get the 212+. I bet the 975 could easily take you to 4Ghz...
