CPU temp/Core temp discrepancy

Thread Starter
I have two instances of confusion, but first, let's get the basics out the way. The cooling system on my machine is an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2. There is a feed fan sucking in cold air in front of the HDDs, and an exhaust fan at the back of the case, both 120 mm in size. The case itself has a VERY large, but extremely slow spinning fan (360 mm in size) on the side. Room temperatures are around 23-25 Celsius or so, but can vary from 20-26 depending on the heating arrangement of the room.

Now, to business. The first thing is that my temperature monitoring programs show significant discrepancy between my "CPU temp" and the actual core temps. You can see this in the screenshot below. As seen, core temps are in good agreement with one another regardless of the program used to measure them. However, on Speedfan "TEMP 1" shows a very high temperature compared to the others - THIS is the temperature that is in agreement with the CPU temperature entry in my BIOS Hardware monitor. I therefore presume this is the CPU temperature.

Now this is the temp that worries me - it idles at around 48-50 Celsius and at load can easily hit 70 Celsius - and this is not an OC CPU.

Can anyone explain the reason for this discrepancy to me?

Second problem, again, relating to this "TEMP 1". On startup, this temperature actually is closer to 42-43 Celsius. However, within 15-20 min, this temperature will climb to it's normal range of about 48-50 Celsius and then stay there. Any ideas why the climb and plateau? Only thing I can think of is when I fit the heatsink I might not have applied enough thermal paste - but I've since reseated the heatsink and there appears to be no change no matter what I do. This temperature was the same when I only had stock cooling and no case fans - it's not changed at all.

Wouldn't worry about it. Probably being read wrong by the software.

The climb and plateau is normal. Takes some time for the heatsink to get hot.

There are probably 5-6 of the very same topics posted in the Air Cooling forum right now. You should probably learn to use the search engine, or at least just look through the forums before you post a new topic.

Where? I found nothing on the first 2 pages of the air cooling forum and the first 5 search results ("cpu temps vs core temps") gave nothing.

Many thanks, sir. Does this mean I should ignore temp 1 for diagnostic purposes? If I wanted to overclock, is it safe to go only by the core temps?

I did. What I found was ambiguous or simply not there. Apologies for inconvenience caused, but I always search before I post new topics. If you could point me in the direction of these topics that you have found, I'd be most grateful.
