Hi everyone. I just finished up building my new PC and I am interested in overclocking it. Did a search and found this site so I thought i would sign up. I have built a few computers but never really messed around much with overclocking except through MSI software that came with my old motherboard (MSI 915P). Here is my current parts list:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D w 4x 120mm fans (2 cool air in, 2 hot air out)
MoBo: Asus Rampage 3 Extreme
CPU: Intel I7 950 3.06Ghz
Cooler: Corsair H70 2x 120mm fans pulling in cool air.
PSU: Ultra X4 750 Watt
RAM: 4GB Corsair PC16000 2000Mhz Dominator ( I plan on adding 4GB more soon)
Video: Sapphire ATI 6970HD
HD: OCZ 60GB SSD & WD 1TB Black
Keyboard: Logitech G19
Mouse: Logitech G9x
Monitor: Samsung FX2490HD

I figure id ask here before I mess something up. What gains can I expect from overclocking this setup? Im not looking for anything extreme or unstable, just some more power while maintaining stability.

Right now SpeedFan says my CPU is at 36c But I think I have to reseat the cooler (I might have air bubbles in the paste) cuz I heard this setup should idle around 28c.

I look forward to learning a lot from this site.

U can easily get 3.6. If u want to get 4k plus then u should go w/c a real good starter kit is the rasa 240 or 360. Performance wise it will be like night and day trust me. As for idle temperature never compare urs to others many factors play a role in that. Ur temps are perfectly fine. By the way nice rig

A little off topic...
That case is pretty notorious for not being the best air cooler, even with the H70 (almost everyone on here has pretty strong views towards them). 4 x 120mm fans for that giant case...if you start doing Crossfire idk how the cooling will be. You might want to consider a push-pull with the H70 at least.

Welcome to OCN. The build looks pretty nice. With a CPU like that, you might not notice much, unless you do CPU intensive multitasking, because it's already a beast. You'd probably get it to 3.5 - 3.7 no problem before temps become warm.

3.6 would be nice. I got the H70 which is a water cooler, even though its probably not the best. Ill look into the rasa starter kits, thanks.

I have the push pull on the H70, one is on the rear of the case (back of the radiator) bringing in cool air from outside the case and pushing it through the radiator and the other is on the front of the radiator, pulling the air through. I have room for 1 more 120mm fan on the top that I might put in but I dont plan on doing Crossfire, at least not anytime soon. Do the fan brands really matter? I just picked up the cheapest 120mm fans at MicroCenter to get my build going, I didnt check the specs but the CFM is probably somewhere in the 50's if I had to guess. I was just looking for something quiet since the computer is in my room and I dont want it to be loud when Im trying to sleep. I can get faster fans once I get a speed controller so I can turn them down when the computer is at idle.

No disrespect but to me the h70 is a overpriced air cooler. The rig is nice don't get me wrong but u can get a real nice overclock with ur setup if done right

No disrespect taken. I was kind of thinking the same thing but figured id give it a shot since it is liquid cooled. Its just not the best and I do want to upgrade it eventually. I just know the good kits cost a lot more than the $100 I put down for the H70 so I have to save up for a decent kit.

EDIT: actually Im surprised the Rasa 360 is only $50 more than I paid for the H70. Not bad at all.
