Please Help, this computer is driving me nuts

Hey,

A friend of mine gave me his computer to fix, i found the power supply was dead so replaced it. After setting it up it first would only give continuous 3 second beeps, i rebuilt and those stopped but then it would only stay powered on for a few seconds and then went off again, i thought it could be a short but I've rebuilt the thing 3 times, also tried it with just the bare essentials w/ Mobo and Cpu power in, it does the same thing.

It seems to be random whether it stays on or not.

So i removed them and tried starting it using a screwdriver on the pins which did the same working/ not working at random thing, it also powers itself on as soon as i switch on the PSU, but it stays on.

I've also tried a different PSU and power cables, it does the same thing.

So summary of problems,
  • Powers off within a few seconds
  • Sometimes stays on
  • Powers on immediatly after psu is turned on, and stays on (only with case power cables removed)

And I've tried
  • Different PSUs, and Power Cables
  • Running with only Mobo and CPU Power
  • Systematically removing each cable, firewire etc to find cause
  • Rebuilding
  • Clearing CMOS
  • Different Batteries

Oh and it's a fujitsu siemens skt 775.. and i want to smash it with a hammer

Any help would be great,

thanks

I had a Asrock P43DE with the exact same problem there was a short somewhere in the motherboard circuitry. Unfortunately you have to live with it or replace the motherboard.

I had a problem sounded just like that on a friends computer. Turned out the CPU fan was intermittently failing and the BIOS was set to shutdown if CPU fan RPM was 0.
