Laptop HDD Data Recovery

Thread Starter
I broke my HDD of my Dell Inspiron 1318. The Laptop fell on the floor and now the darn thing won't boot anymore. I bought a new HDD and everything works fine again.
The broke HDD model number is: WD3200BEVT
There are some very special pictures on this HDD that I absolutely want to recover if possible. Since this is a SATA HDD and the SATA cable of my Desktop matches the one on the Laptop HDD, what else do I need? What about the power connector? Do PC stores sell some kind of adaptor?
What about the recovery software? Which one is any good?

If all goes weel you won't need a power connector adaptor, since it is equal to the ones of your desktop, you just need one of those available on your rig.
The next step is certify that the HDD do works properly, and don't have mechanical failures, cuz if it does you need to send it to a certified lab where they will dismantle your hdd and try to recover the files, and this is quite expensive...

When i insert my bad hdd in to my laptop windows recovery starts and gives me the message: bad hdd. How bad is that?
I will try and connect the bad hdd to my sig rig and find a free software recovery program.

Download MiniPE, a bootable CD and boot from it on your laptop, with both your damaged HDD and another storage unit connected, just like USB device. You will see a windows alike graphical environment, with something looking like a start menu, there you can choose to run several programs. Try running one of the file explorers and see if you have access to your damaged HDD files. If so, copy them to the other storage unit. when you finished doing this you can run one of the HDD testing programs, like WD Diagnostics, and see if your HDD has bad sectors. if so, format the drive and create partitions that do not include the bad sectors area. This should save your disk for some time, but you won't be able to install OS on it.

If windows can detect your hard drive it shouldn't have mechanical failures, bad sectors is the most probable issue on the drive.

Thanks Matroska, a big +rep man.
I have not yet had the time to do it, but I will try this today.
Good news that if the HDD is recognized the drive is most likely in a more or less good shape.
I'll keep ya posted of what I find.
