Do Consoles drag down PC Games? - Page 5

Pretty much, NES was good, SNES was good, a failed project agreement between Nintendo and Sony created the Playstation that first introduced 3D polygons. Playstation had a good run, the only reason PS2 was successful in killing off Dreamcast was that many people owned PS1 games already so they just bought PS2 to play DVD and their PS1 games. But still PS1 sales dominated PS2 sales.

Nintendo 64 sucked really bad except for the very few games, I still remember some game cartridges costing $79.99 for one game. Sega Saturn was decent only if you got the Japanese imported games. Most of the US games weren't that great except for the very few. The Dreamcast was really good hardware wise though, anti-aliasing was superior compared to PS2. It was kind of sad Bleemcast never took off because of legal reasons. But playing Gran Turismo 2 with Bleemcast on the Dreamcast was awesome. It was like playing a whole new Gran Turismo 2 with the graphics re-done. But when you play it on the PS2 it looked like crap with no enhancements that Sony kept promising. PS1 games barely got any enhancements while playing it on PS2 hardware.

Then XBOX came out, it was okay but the hardware was kind of too bulky and the controllers kind of sucked but they fixed it with XBOX360. PS3 was too expensive, $700 for a console. I still don't own anything Bluray yet. I have two XBOX360's though, I never play them. Majority of XBOX360 games are boring and have no depth. The Wii was innovative in design but the games aren't really for me. It's something I'd like messing around and playing a game for like 15 minutes and then quitting.

But still I'd rather go play Super Mario World on SNES than play the newest game on XBOX360. Gameplay and storyline in these consoles games just have no depth anymore. I remember when developers tried to cram as much stuff they could on a cartridge because of size limitation. The story and concepts would be really good. Now they just fill all that space with textures and graphics and forget about how important story and depth of gameplay are.

Still don't know why people still think Crysis is the best game in the world. The engine is great, the graphics are very good, the gameplay and storyline not so much. It needs a hell of lot of work. I'm glad there are still smaller game studios that are trying to do something totally different. The last game I played that I really liked was Red Faction Guerilla (bought during THQ pack XMAS Steam Sale). I didn't really think that game was going to be good but the destruction is just incredible and so realistic that I kind of when I look at Bad Company 2's destruction. Metro 2033 was okay, I didn't think it was that great. I hated the whole gas mask look thing on my face. Who wants to play a game for so many hours with a gas mask stuck on their face? Wearing a gas mask for several hours in real life sucks ass if anyone wanted to know about that.

But there's not much we can do, most developers are getting pushed around by the publishers to make games for certain platforms and concentrate on consoles more. Because consoles are cheap and if little Billy doesn't get his XBOX360 and his favorite game Halo 3 then he's going to throw a tantrum. They just make a ton of cash selling games for $59.99 a pop VS PC $49.99. Accessibility is just way better for consoles than it is for PC. You don't need technical knowledge to play console games, put in disc play and power off when done. PC, plan build, plan parts to buy, budget money, buy right gaming equipment, put all together, install game, install patch, update drivers, start game, config controls, and then play. Just too many steps for noobies.

I just don't see myself playing games forever though, I think at one point I'll totally quit and move on to something else. It's kind of like been there, done that, seen that game concept before, someone else already did it, same game different theme.

Yup, I played both. As well as games like Descent, DOOM, Wolfenstein and Myth, and going back further, King's Quest, Space Quest, Orgeon Trail, Battlechess, Prince of Persia and even further than that, Green Beret, Spy Vs. Spy...

So, I came into the "game" much sooner than most people on this board did. I'm just not jaded by an elitist "PC Gamer" view like most. I realize the importance of the consoles and what they've done for gaming and I enjoy gaming on consoles and on PC.

its not about being jaded, or playing on both systems.

its as simple as are consoles holding back PC gaming. Yes.

If consoles werent holding back pc gaming, we would never have gotten bad company 2. Sure its a great game, but it is no battlefield 3.

Is anyone saying that good games cannot be made on consoles, no we arent. Just that some games cannot be done on a console, and most developers want to focus on the consoles, so we dont get the game that PCs can handle, we get the equivalent to the console version.

The answer is just a plain yes, its not being elistist, its being realistic about what a console is capable of, and what the pc is capable of. If consoles didnt exist, would the PC releases of those games be better. damn right they would be.

console gaming is just /sigh. the old classics that have been mentioned i.e the snes were awesome now its just mundane.... pc gaming takes alot more skill with a kb and mouse, anyone can pick up a controller and play reasonable within a few mins its just to easy where as kb and mouse takes more skill and concentration to learn...

The only thing stopping developers from making PC exclusive titles is their own desire for more profit. Unless the developer is owned by a console manufacturer, they are free to develop on any platform they choose.

There is a reason the Wii, which is based off 10 year old hardware, does not hold back PS3/360 development despite having sold almost twice as much hardware. Its because 3rd party developers found that only Nintendo software tends to sell in large volumes on that platform. So you only get the occasional CoD money grab on the Wii for multiplatform titles.

When games sell well on PC like StarCraft or WoW, then you can be sure that you will see more of those games in the future. So you can blame the developers for wanting to make more money off their work for all the console ports.

i think they should focus more on PC gamers since WE spend the MOST money on our rigs and gaming peripherals rather than an xbox fatass that sits on a couch and inserts a CD and hes ready to play. just saying.

thats what nvidia and ati are recognizing, and are beginning to focus on their pc gaming adventures more. ATI is heavily invested in Battlefield 3 and is pretty much the reason we saw dx11 support at all in bad company 2.

I wouldnt be suprised to see amd/nvidia begin their own developing department soons to keep the focus on pc gaming.

In the current climate, if it wasn't for console games we would get barely any games for PC at all. :-(

Thread Starter
I dont know about you guys, but Pirated games is not something I do as a PC gamer, since I want the software developers of my favorite games to have money to develop a sequel. I feel $30-$50 or so is a small price to pay for a game like Company of Heroes that I have over 4300 hours logged on my Steam acct.

Anyways, I guess we can agree on that software developers for high-dollar console companies find there is more money in developing software for DX9 GPU'd consoles, rather than DX11 games.

How long has DX11 cards been out? I just began to consider the possibility that there are very few DX11 games, because there is not enough money behind software development for that generation of GPU's, as it sits, I currently play the hell out of an originally DX9 game (CoH) and long for a DX11 version of it, but nothing seems to be on the drawing board from what I hear.

I just hope piracy gets f*** someday.... that way they will focus on PC and forget about stupid consoles.
