ITS NOT FAIR GOML
For pricing you always compare all existing options... that's the way it goes.
In order to compare their technologies, you look at the same generation processors regardless of the price, such as; the i7 980 vs 1100T. But then even the i7 950 (which is a quadcore) beats the 1100T (which is a hexacore) in most applications... so there is no denying that AMD is currently behind Intel in terms of technological advances.

I am one of those that thought about waiting for socket 2011 when I heard about the design error of the socket 1155 boards, mostly becuase I wouldn't mind waiting a few more months.

After reading through this whole thread I've heard some 'rumours?' that have great influence in my decision.

I am building a rig for gaming and 3d design (autodesk) and always thought that 1155 whould be more than enough to run these applications fine.
  • Now I'm hearing the rumour that Ive Bridge processors (6/8 cores?) will also release on socket 1155?
  • Socket 2011, not Ivy Bridge, is for the extreme enthousiasts? (extreme editions CPU)

Is there any truth in these rumours? If there is I am going for a 1155 motherboard (with an Ivy bridge CPU) in april and it will be the basis of my rig. If not I'm going to wait for the 2011 and with quad channel mem en Ivy bridge CPU's.

I don't think i'm the only one with this problem so i'd like to hear some thoughts about it!

They're not rumours, Ivy Bridge is not the Socket 2011 version of Sandy Bridge, it's the 22nm shrink that I'm pretty sure comes out next year, Q1 or Q2, Sandy Bridge will come out on Socket 2011/1356 later this year.

Somewhere everyone forgot the strategy Intel has been using for the past 2 generations (Tick Tock) and thinks Ivy Bridge is a new CPU for a new socket, it's not, it'll be the same sockets and a different node with more cores, but thats probably it. (Think the 980X vs the 975, thats the difference between SB and IB, nothing else.)

Ivy Bridge when it comes out on the 1155 motherboard will still be considered a mainstream cpu. If it comes out on the 2011 socket, which could be the replacement for 1366, it will be considered a enthusiast cpu.

The problem with that is, I'm pretty sure 2011 will be for extreme enthusiasts (i.e. Skulltrail, the eVGA SR-2 crowd) and servers, while Socket B2 or 1356 is the Socket 1366 replacement. (Smaller servers and enthusiasts)

2 and 4 core go to 1155, 6 and 8 core go to 2011. Both are 22nm.

Christ, so there is also a socket 1356 coming out This socket has the same release date as the 2011? If that's the case them I'll be waiting for the 1356, skip 1155 and skipp the 2011.

So if I understand correctly

1155<1356<2011 and all three sockets will have Ivy and Ivy bridge CPU's.

What's the faster one? I'm guessing the Ivy since they're 22nm or can I expect high(er) end Sandy's to come as well?

Original whitesheets said 32nm chips first, 2 and 4 cores on 1155, 2, 4, 6 and 8 cores on both 1356 and 2011, Socket 2011 having 2 QPI links (For quad CPU servers) and quad channel RAM and 1356 having tri channel RAM and 1 QPI link. (For dual CPU servers)

22nm comes next year, core codename is Ivy Bridge.
