Asus Rampage Extreme Problems Default & Auto

Thread Starter
ASUS Rampage Extreme X48
BIOS: 1301 (Latest)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
2x2GB Geil Black Dragon PC3-12800 DDR3-1600Mhz CL 9-9-9-24 1.6v
ASUS EAH4890 1Gb GDDR5
500Gb Hitachi Harddrive
OCZ Gamexstreme 1010w

I have built a new system, I' am new to overclocking but, I know very little about overclocking and understand some workaround with the BIOS.

My computer worked perfectly without any crashes and played a game but when I switch the computer power off and turn off main power plug, the next day then I have turn it on log into Windows 7 and then baam crashes on desktop,

Everything in BIOS are on Auto and "F5" default settings, I often get blue screens, could not read from memory read or write error etc. I get loads of errors when opening IE, Windows Update, My Computer, Games etc.

When I reset CMOS My E8400 is automatically overclocked to 3.60Ghz, I've checked this in "My Computer" then "Properties".

I have memtested, all passed with no errors! When it crashes in Windows I have installed and stress tested with Prime95 and I get errors.

But whenever it doesn't crash by restarted for some time, then my stress test passes???

I have tried installing fresh copies of Windows 7 and the next following day it crashes.I have not installing drivers and and not installing them aswell still crashes.

I have tested with another graphics card same problems, tried a 500w PSU same problems, I have tested with different harddrive same problem, I have tried disconnected extra pereparals same problems, tried Windows XP but it doesn't crash and give me blue screens or errors, etc.

I think it's something to do with my settings on "Auto" in the bios.

Can someone help me to get my BIOS settings on my computer stable? All Mhz, timings, voltages setting etc. I heard on this forum that you shouldn't leave voltages on Auto.

I' am not using my computer untill I can get it stable

I will be very happy if I get help from you guys!

I have the same problem !!

My system:

-Asus Rampage Extreme X48 Rev2
-Intel C2Q Q6600 G0 SLACR
-Thermaltake DuOrb CPU Cooler
-G.Skill Ripjaws X series DDR3-1600Mhz CL6 1.5V 4GB (2x2GB)
-EVGA Geforce GTX 285 1GB-DDR3
-LG DVDRW GSA-H22N
-Maxtor 160GB SATA + Hitachi 160GB SATA (in RAID-0)
-WDC 500GB SATA, SAMSUNG 320GB (Storage)
-Keymouse 500W (12V+@25A)
-Thermaltake Xaser-VI Case

Problems are with Windows 7 32Bit and this is some of them:

-Lots of BSOD's with 0x0000008E & 0x0000007E & 0xC0000005... 1D ... AD
-Windows Explorer stop working !
-Windows Manager stop working !
-Aero sometimes stops before crashes !
-EPU-6 Engine stop working !

After restarting, it took a while to detect the HDD's again and it detect them with something like: !@$%^# 500GB or *&!@# 160GB

I almost try everything except switching the motherboard & PSU

1. changing memory slots - nothing
2. booting with 1 stick of RAM - nothing
3. switching to Geforce 9400GT to make sure it's not power problem - nothing
4. installing Windows 7 on another HDD - nothing
5. memtest - nothing
6. cheking HDD's - nothing
7. updating to Service Pack 1 - nothing
8. reinstalling Windows 7 32Bit - nothing
9. checking for RustB viruses - nothing
10. updating the BIOS from 0301 to 1301 - nothing but it fixed the delay of ROG logo during post

It's Impossible to boot into windows directly without passing windows repair several times !
and sometimes i can get to windows and work/game normally more than 3 hours

so I'm 100% sure that something is wrong with BIOS settings "Voltages & Memory Timings!", also I think that there is something wrong with windows 7 32bit with this board !

For me, I've found that the best settings to get a chance to log in to windows are:

1. FSB = 400MHz
2. FSB Strap to Northbridge = 400MHz (so that i can run RAM@1600MHz)
3. Memory speed = 1600MHz
4. Memory Command Rate = N2
5. Memory Timings = "first 4 options 6-8-6-24 and others set to Auto"
6. Memory Voltage = Auto "it will run sometimes @1.6 and sometimes @1.7" i've noticed that it's harder to log in to windows setting this to RAM's default @ 1.5v
7. CPU Voltage = Auto
8. CPU PLL Voltage = Auto "it gives me 1.79V but it's harder to boot at Q6600's default @ 1.5v or OC's best voltage @ 1.62v"
9. CPU Ratio = 8
10. All other BIOS options are Auto and default

Please give me the best BIOS settings to fix this problem cuz I'm not gonna miss with voltage settings myself ..

When setting every thing to Auto, BIOS will overclock your FSB from E8400's default bus "FSB1333-333MHz" to FSB1600-400MHz so that RAM is able to run at it's default speed "1600MHz" !
You can run your CPU at default speed when setting FSB manually to 333MHz, and set FSB strap to Northbridge to 333MHz then Setting your RAM speed to 1333MHz !

Both of you are experiencing RAM issues..

Set RAM speed lower than 1600MHz and you will not have those problems..

Lower RAM speed is something you would not notice in gaming or everyday usage..

Try out these settings:

Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
FSB Frequency [333]
CPU Ratio=AUTO
STRAP=AUTO
DRAM freq=1333 (pretty much set anything lower than 1600MHz)
DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
1st Information : 6-8-6-24 and the rest on AUTO
2nd Information : leave these on AUTO
3rd Information : Leave these on AUTO

Vcore Voltage [AUTO]
CPU PLL Voltage= 1.56V
FSB Termination Voltage =1.20V
North Bridge 1.30V
DRAM Voltage=1.60V
DRAM VTT Volt=AUTO
South Bridge 1.05 Voltage
south Bridge 1.5 Voltage

Thanks KingT but that didn't help

Running @ 2.4Ghz & 1066MHz RAM is the same as running @ 3.6Ghz & 1600MHz RAM, both gives lots of errors & BSOD's & both sometimes get to windows and run perfectly

I've noticed that when it crashes, hard disks spin-up again then BIOS re-detect them wrong, the question is who turned them off ?

I'm waiting my new PSU to arrive, a Gigabyte Odin 800W, I'm not 100% sure that my current PSU is delivering enough of juice, it delivers 11.3~11.5 volts on the 12V rail "BIOS readings" so what happens when it runs @full load ? 10v?

I got this board from a friend and he was running a Q9550 with 4GB (2 sticks) of G.Skill CL8 1600MHz & GTX 460 + TT 720w PSU !
The system was running perfectly when I got it !!

@mohammad SF - akhi!!! your experiencing HDD issues...

Maxtor 160GB SATA + Hitachi 160GB SATA (in RAID-0)

to run any raid array you need exactly the same makers/models of HDD's and then assemble a raid.

hope this helps... where dya live btw?

No it's not HDD problem, I can't even boot without HDD's from a bootable OS "I have a bootable XP on a DVD"

Also, you can run Raid Arrays without problems if both disks match "Size, Speed, Cache...etc" but from different makers..
Thanks for advise and btw I'm from Lebanon

--------------------------------

At last I've found the problem !!

I've got MemSet 4.1 monitoring my RAM, then got MemTest 4.0 by HCI Design to test my RAM, and CPU-Z monitoring FSB Speed & CPU voltage, I've decided to play with all BIOS settings to find stability..

Got to the BIOS and Enabled X.M.P profile so that RAM should run @ 1600MHz 6-8-6-24-2N @ 1.5v and every thing else @ Auto except for CPU Multi @ 8x to keep it @ 3.2GHz..

Then start testing RAM with MemTest 4.0 and got tons of errors and BSOD's !
Can't pass 1% test so I went to one stick of RAM but both sticks failed !

Suddenly I've noticed that when I got an error in MemTest, MemSet shows a drop in Memory Speed from 800.9mhz to 787.6mhz and on another error it jumps to 809.4mhz while the FSB maintains @ 400.4Mhz , that made me suspect the memory voltages !

I've went to the BIOS and start bumping memory voltages by 0.03+,with each bump I got less errors while testing till all errors gone @ 1.72v

I've sent and Email to G.Skill and they recommend to never pass 1.65v for long lifetime, and they said that my problem is that the X48 Chip can't handle 1600Mhz memory @ CL6 and recommend to do the following for stability:

FSB Termination = 1.3v
NB Voltage = 1.4v or 1.45v
RAM Voltage = 1.65v

Then test each stick alone @ 1600 6-8-6-24-2N , if it fails then test @ 1600 7-8-7-24-2N, and they should run stable, if a stick failed then I got a deffective kit !!

Well, only one stick did pass and run stable @ 1600Mhz CL6 1.65v with their recommended settings, and the other one failed even @ CL7 1.72v

So I've called for RMA and I'm waiting for a replacement

Here's the settings for a stable G0 @ 3.2GHz and Ram @ 1600Mhz CL6:

Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
FSB Frequency [400]
CPU Ratio = 8.0
PCIE = 100
FSB Strap to Northbridge = 200 "Memory to FSB devider is 1:2"
DRAM freq = 1600
Command Rate = 2N
DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
1st Information = 6-8-6-24 and the rest on AUTO
2nd Information = AUTO
3rd Information = AUTO

Ai Clock Twister = Auto
Ai Booster = Auto

Vcore Voltage = 1.356v
CPU PLL Voltage = 1.511V
FSB Termination Voltage = 1.3122V
GTL-REF0 = 40mv+
GTL-REF1 = 40mv+
GTL-REF2 = 40mv+
GTL-REF3 = 40mv+
NB GTL = Auto
North Bridge = 1.45V -> from 1.3v to 1.45v CPU went from 74c to 67c & NB from 68c to 62c !
DRAM Voltage = 1.65V
South Bridge 1.05 Voltage = Auto
south Bridge 1.5 Voltage = Auto

CPU Spread Spectrum = Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum = Disabled
C1E Support = Disabled
Speedstep = Disabled

Thank you and hope this helps..
