no output to subwoofer from windows

This is a puzzling one for me. I recently moved into a small apartment and to save space I connected my computer to my surround receiver. With the positioning of my monitor and chair, I can play games and get full 5.1 sound now, which is great. However, I've noticed that when playing music from Windows (in ANY application, iTunes, VLC, whatever), there's absolutely no output to the subwoofer. There's plenty of bass action when playing PC games (the neighbours can attest to that), but nothing for music, and I'm damned if I can figure out why not.

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit. The motherboard is an ASUS Striker Extreme with its integrated SupremeFX (Soundmax) ADI 1988B running the latest Soundmax drivers (6260). My audio is being output through SPDIF (I tried both coax and optical) to my receiver. I'm using the DTS output option in the Soundmax control panel, although I tried Sonic Focus as well but that didn't help. When I try the speaker test from Soundmax, there's no output to the sub, but again, the sub works when I fire up something like Dead Space 2.

I did a bunch of searching online but my Google-Fu has failed me. I really like this setup (Team Fortress is a lot easier when you can hear them coming behind you) and I'll be keeping it either way, I just want to have full audio range when I listen to my music. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

Hah, no, it's not like that... the music just sounds so FLAT without the lower registers. I don't listen to cranked-up "thumpa-thumpa" music, I just appreciate a full range. And frankly I'm a bit of a nit-picker, I don't like it when my computer isn't doing what it should. And I DEFINITELY don't like problems I can't solve.
