[NS]THQ pulls plug on Company of Heroes Online, WWE Online

Early this week THQ pulled the rug from under players currently in the open beta for Company of Heroes Online by abruptly announcing that the testing period will end on March 31st as it "evaluates the next steps for the Company of Heroes series". Developer Relic then confirmed that all player data would be wiped following the conclusion of the OB, leaving players scratching their heads (to say the least) over what exactly is going on with the MMO.

Wiping out player data between the open beta and actual game launch never really inspires any confidence, and today THQ confirms its reasons: there will never be an actual launch for Company of Heroes Online now. In their financial report for the third quarter of their 2011 fiscal year, the publisher slips in a little mention that the MMO has been cancelled. That's not the only MMO project it has pulled the plug from: WWE Online has been cancelled as well.

In the fiscal third quarter, the company reevaluated its strategy of adapting certain Western content for free-to-play online games in Asian markets. As a result, the company's fiscal third quarter non-GAAP results exclude a charge of $9.9 million related to the cancellation of Company of Heroes Online and WWE Online.

So the actual COH is still online, if not I'm going to be angry, my friend just bought it and we were going to play a bunch.

The regular CoH should be good this only is for the free to play version that they recently just released.

That's sad, but the online version was really incomplete anyway. It did add some great new features like upgrades and tweaks, however, it will be missed. I guess the other versions of the game will suffice.

The real news here is that WWE Online even made it past being some guy's punchline in their think-tank.

Ha! After last data wipe they were all " don't woory guyz there won't be another wipe. Play this game blah blah blah"
It's true, I remember, when CB ended, they wiped data. That was all well and fine...
I returned for OB, and their first notice was that there would be NO MORE DATA WIPES.

Sorry, but data isn't exactly difficult to store, even if the plug is being pulled on the game. I bet a $60 drive could easily store the very limited amount of stats for each and every player in OB.

Wiping after beta is the norm. Wiping after saying you won't is not. THQ has made me sad frown.gif
