Will my cpu hold back a hd 6850?

Thread Starter
So i'm thinking of finally getting a video card because my comp is currently using integrated sadly. I was thinking of getting one of the hd 6850's. However my computer is currently using an AMD Phenom X4 9100e(1.8GHz) non-overclocked. I'm just curious if that GPU might be held back from the CPU, and if so by how much, and what GPU might be a better fit. Thank you in advance.

FPS' will always be lower with slower CPUs, unless you buy a high-end product. Still, there are chips that perform quite well and make the bottleneck a little less noticeable. The CPU upgrade depends on your board, if you want to keep it, and on how much you want to spend. For an AMD build, i can suggest that you upgrade to an Athlon II X3/X4 if you are running on a low budget, or, if you can afford to spend a little extra, a Phenom II X4/X6. If you use your system mainly to game, a Phenom II X4 955 BE would be your best choice in my opinion, if you stick to the motherboard and it supports it, of course.

i upgraded from a q9300 quad core @ 2.5 gig w/ 2x gts 450's in sli, when i got my i7 950 starcraft 2 framerates went from 70-90 on medium to 145-210 on high, so yes...dont bother with the upgrades unless you wanna splurge for a 500$ cpu/mobo combo

Yeah i figured it'd hold the gpu back. However i'm not going to be able to upgrade the cpu, and i want to have atleast a dedicated graphics card and not intel. So any suggestions on what GPU would be a good match?

It wont hold a 6850 back significantly but there will be some slight loss in performance with a lower end processor.

I'd say go for it, your still going to get massive improvements over your current card, then when you upgrade down the track you can choose to hold on to your current vid card or even get a second one.

I agree with eggs2see, upgrade to the HD6850, you will notice improvement despite the card is being hold a little. The performance decrease will highly depend on the resolution you want to play. Where a i7-980x may pull 100FPS you might just get 50, maybe more, maybe less, depending on the games also...it is har to tell for sure the performance drop, but the upgrade is always recommended.

the hd 6850 is 165$ on newegg (HiS in my sig rig) bang/buck this is definately the card you wanna get, i got 2 of them just because the price/preformance ratio was unprecidented...330$ got me 2 of them, 350$ will get you the 6970...2 6850's outbenchmark the 6970 by an average of about 40%...pretty significant, the 6850 also kicks the crap out of a gtx 460 by about 15-20% and they're the same price
