[MB] Motorola’s Atrix 4G Laptop Dock to cost $500

If you want the Atrix 4G’s Laptop Dock, you can either pay $499.99 to buy it bundled with the phone, or the same $499.99 to get the dock separately.

Yes, you read that right — the dock will cost the same as an iPad, even though it relies mostly on the Atrix’s hardware to function (it’s basically just a keyboard and screen shell that gets powered up by the phone). While the dock does feature a battery of its own, that’s still little reason to price it the same as a full-fledged computer.

AT&T is also forcing users to sign up for its tethering plan at $20 a month if they want to get the Atrix bundled with the Laptop Dock. I suppose it makes sense since the dock relies on the Atrix’s network connection, but it still seems ridiculous for AT&T to demand even more money when the dock itself is overpriced.

Horrible. Just flat out terrible, AT&T.

People at XDA are pissed about this. Hell I am too, I was going to get the atrix because of the dock (older leaks suggested the price of the dock to be 150 which isn't bad). But because of this theres little to no chance that I'm going to buy an atrix, I might as well get the Inspire or I might wait to see whats announced at the Mobile world congress in Barcelona next week.
I mean how can they justify charging 500 dollars for a laptop shell, sure it has a screen, keyboard and battery but hey theres netbooks that are under 200 bucks.
EDIT: Oh yea the tethering fee too... I don't even need to talk about that do I...

I'm yet read to read a single positive comment anywhere about this pricing scheme. And then they want to force you to use a tethered data plan? C'mon, gimme a break. You wind up paying hundreds more in addition to the upfront $500. Even at $20/month it's an additional $480 (plus tax, not counting your regular data and cell phone plan). Unless you rely completely on cellular data at home (which I bet hardly anyone does), this is just an utter waste of money.

Flat out sucker pricing is all it is.

Well, at least the Atrix itself is going to be the normal $199 for a high end phone. I will be preordering this beast to replace my crappy iphone 3g.

Bet that's the initial price to make the $500 phone/laptop dock bundle sound great and they'll drop it soon in the future.

Phone price looks good, sucks the dock is over priced though. I will still be picking one of the phones up on the 6th.

Woah woah woah...I didn't see that they want to force a tethering plan on you when using the dock. I honestly cannot fathom how someone in congress/government cannot see the blatant illegal practices going on by wireless companies and multiple data plan fees for the same data. Whether you browse on a 4" screen or a 12.4" screen -- data is data. The argument of "you'll consume more with a bigger screen" is rendered invalid because we are already subjected to overage charges. So if we use more than our allotted data, we'll pay accordingly. It is double and triple charging by the carriers and it has to stop. It is things like this that easily justify jailbreaking/rooting/hacking phones and making use of "illegitimate" tethering services.

If it is in fact true that we'll need to pay for a normal data plan and then a tethering plan on top of it, I won't even give the Atrix a glance.

Now, the hardware pricing isn't all that bad. A top end smartphone is typically $200-$300 on contract (and upwards of $500-$700 off contract) anyway. A GOOD usable laptop is another $600+. $500 isn't bad in this case. Too bad the service is highway robbery.

I agree. And your name is brilliant. I had a chuckle at your expense, Mr. WingedCow.
