Just reseated my Hyper 212+, how many CC of TIM is normally used?

My initial mounting method was dot in middle of CPU. When I took it off I saw that the TIM (Shin Etsu X23 7783D from Ebay) has spread all across the CPU and cover all the heat pipes.

However, it looks like I put way too much TIM the first time (a grain of rice first time) as it looks like an even layer underneath like in the reviews but I'm thinking how much metal to metal contact can there be if it's gray all over.

So I redid it using the three line method with a toothpick making sure to not use a lot of TIM. I didn't measure the exact amount (forgot to check where the syringe is when I started pumping) but I'm guessing 0.05 - 0.08 CC of TIM was used this time. I'm still not sure if I used too much this time. Guess I won't be able to tell unless I redo the mount, which I am very hesitant to do.

After the remount I saw a 2C difference no load 4C under load initially. This is before the TIM has time to cure. I believe Shin-Etsu takes ~4 hours to cure.

So if you are getting high temps make sure you didn't use too much TIM.

Next time I'm going to try a mount with .05cc (exact) of TIM. Is that enough or too much?

It really depends upon the surface quality of the cooler and the cpu-integrated-heatsink. The purpose is to create a bridge in those places (microscopic) where the cooler doesnt touch the cpu (due to unevenness). Too much TIM can hurt you and less than needed will not serve your purpose. I use a very small drop of tim (about .05cc actually) at the middle of the cpu, press down the cooler, hold it for a moment that way, then twit it in both directions by a lil amount. This bridges all the gaps and serves the purpose.
