There's Halo 1 and 2 for PC, Unreal Tournament 3. Portal too, but I'm sure that's not what you're looking for. Borderlands might too, but I haven't actually played and seen what the guns are like that much. Section 8 is pretty sci-fi too, but I don't recall hearing much praise for that game, it kind of seemed to go off the radar. You could also always go older and play Quake 1/2/3/4 or Unreal Tournament 2004, or the Half-Life games.

Mass Effect = Third Person (maybe he's ok with third person though, but he said FPS)

And SC2 I assume is Starcraft 2, which is an RTS. Although I hear the level editor is so good you could make an FPS, but I don't think that's what he's looking for.

I haven't gotten far enough in Crysis to pick up alien weapons, so I can't comment on that. Although I do believe you can pick them up, which I assume shoot lasers and things of that nature.

Sci Fi...Dead Space? I didn't like it, but that's the most popular example that I can think of and maybe you'd have a different experience. Would you consider the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series to be Sci Fi? Is Half-Life too obvious of a suggestion?

This game is insanely fun to play at lan parties due to its fast pace. It's more arena based though.
