Right, when I first started discipline shooting they gave me a thin piece of wire about two fingers long. They said; "Bring it close to your face slowly...", so I did, went straight to my right eye. They told me to disregard hand, eye dominance it much more important. Listen to the pro's, eh?

btw, is there a specific reason behind this? or does it just feels natural for you?

for me, it's easier to stabilize the camera in portrait with my left eye. this is because i press the first metacarpal bone of my right hand into my forehead and hold the lens as normal with my left. it's especially useful for long/heavy lenses. if i use my right eye in portrait orientation, my right hand uncomfortably floats above my head.

so to answer your question, yes it does feel more natural for me using my left eye for portrait.

Right eye for me, but I do use my left when in portrait mode (like Dreamkiller) and occasionally when using the McNally grip.

I like to use my right eye, especially in portrait, so I can look around with my other eye when shooting events like sports. I can use both however.

OP - you said hand / eye dominance aren't always the same. In fact, they're often the opposites. A left hand part of the brain controls the right hand side of the body and vice versa*. The eyes aren't crossed like that so, right handed, left hand side of the brain dominates, left eye dominates. That's why people often say that use leftys are more artistic. That's because a different left-hand part of the brain controls creativity - the right is more logical.

Also, eye dominance isn't the only factor here as it may be easier to use a camera with one eye than the other. Maybe having your nose up against the LCD gives the camera a bit more stability?

I'd be interested to see the results of this too - do people use their dominant eye for the viewfinder?

eyedom.gif

Extend both hands forward of your body and place the hands together making a small triangle (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch per side) between your thumbs and the first knuckle.

With both eyes open, look through the triangle and center something such as a doorknob or the bullseye of a target in the triangle.

Close your left eye. If the object remains in view, you are right eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the left, then you are left eye dominant.

To validate the first test, look through the triangle and center the object again with both eyes open.

Close your right eye. If the object remains in view, you are left eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the right, then you are right eye dominant.

test here

Left eye, right handed. I always though that I was right eyed,

I'm right handed but use the left eye when looking through the viewfinder but also because I find it more comfortable using the left eye.

I am both right(taking notes) and left(writing on chalkboard) handed, but mainly use my left eye. I am in +2.75 on my right, but excellent on my left.
When I went to get my eye exam done they told me I cant see "...." on my right eye, but I see what I am not supposed to see on my left. They also told me I somehow damaged my right eye when I was kid, but hardly remember that, but who knows as I was playing with laser pointers when I was kid. rolleyes.gif
