First time builder, looking for advice

Thread Starter

Hello everyone. I've been looking into building myself a gaming rig for quite some time, and I finally have the cash to do so. I've actually been talking to some people on a different forum, and have tweaked my initial idea for a build quite significantly, but I figured I would post it up here as well, see if any of you might have suggestions.

So, what do you all think? Oh, and this is to be a budget gaming rig, and I do intend to overclock, if that matters in your assessment. Also, since I intend to overclock, would you recommend getting a premium thermal compound like Arctic Silver 5?
umm i would say nice build i might recommend a hyperx ram because they usually oc better, for cpu cooling definately get arctic silver 5 and you should be fine with a 520 watt psu; and i might mention dont forget to get os, dvd drive mouse and keyboard and screens into your build, although i am probably guessing you have one from a previous computer

I do already have mouse, keyboard and monitor. I am also buying the 64-bit Win 7, but I figured that an os was a no brainer so didn't bother listing it. Will be adding the AS5 to my shopping cart on Newegg, unless you guys can suggest a comparably (or better) priced thermal compound that might be superior

1. Just $5 more gets you some better quality 1600 CL9 RAM (if you're intent on 2x4GB)
2. Don't pair a 955 with that board. 4+1 power phase and mosfets that don't look very reliable (not low RDS, third transistor, etc.). Do set some money aside to spend more for a motherboard with 8+2/heatsinks especially for overclocking; a great choice for the price for $89, $74 AR is the ASUS M4A79XTD EVO

if your gaming i don't see benefits in 8 gigs of ram 4 or 6 is fine if you want to save a bit of money.

Ah, I didn't notice the promo code on the 1600 ram. Will be swapping those out. Also, I had previously considered several ASUS boards, but couldn't find them for a low enough price. I suppose, once taking the rebate into account, it is fairly worthwhile to grab the M4A79, though. Thanks

it's 4 on 8 on AMD (2 DIMMs or 4 DIMMs) for dual channel.

That looks alright, but after having built my sig rig fairly blindly I want to leave these words here: get a good PSU and case. These guys will stay around much longer than most of your components for most builds. I think full towers are always a good idea, just with the idea of future expansions in mind; I know I won't be able to fit my next build in a mid tower. From what I see you PSU looks solid, and StormScouts are great cases, but if you come up with any extra cash you want to dump into the rig, I'd pick one of those two places to do it.

Would you recommend dropping down to 4gb ram? I would have thought 8 was better, simply because I doubt it will ever bottleneck with that much, but if 4 is enough, I could certainly save a bit of cash by dropping down to 2x2gb sticks
