Linux Noob, wanting to learn! - Page 14

Thread Starter
Uh oh. I appeared to have screwed things up nicely .

I wanted to see if there was any way to right click a folder, and play all of the contents within said folder (such as a music album). I got that to work. However now, clicking ANY folder, opens up Movie Player. I can't even get to my home directory, it just opens in Move Player .

You guys are probably going to LOL hard at that . But is there any way to fix it?

EDIT:
Also, now there's a really annoying thing going on with OCN (not sure about other sites). It gives me the option to share each individual post with twitter and a bunch of other things. Any way to remove that?

EDIT2:
Oh god, what has Admin done!!! It's on Windows too!!! Admin, quit making OCN look like freaking Facebook!!!

Still having the original issue though. Anytime I click a folder now, it opens with Movie Player. Even if there's no files to play in it. I cannot get a folder to open using the folder explorer program .

Hey there! Hoping I can jump in and provide some help. I've only done a quick skim-through of these 14-pages, but from what I see you're currently using KDE, or Kubuntu, correct?

If so, you should be able to go to System Settings > Default Applications > File Manager. You will want to set this to Dolphin.

If you're using the Gnome desktop, or... "regular" Ubuntu, you should start "nautilus" from a terminal, right click any folder and go to Properties > Open With, and set your default file manager there, which is usually nautilus, but may actually come up as "File Manager".

Either one of these should work. If not, please provide more details on the method you used to do this play-all-media-in-folder workaround.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thank you . I vowed not to post until this "Like" crap is removed off the site, but I wanted to tell you that did the trick, and thank you.

For those who care:
I've been using Ubuntu / Kubuntu (whatever it is now with KDE) since I got it worked out earlier this morning as my default OS. I'm still running 7 underneath of it as the host. But this is working quite well as my main OS.

If I ever end up getting Steam, XFire, and Skype to work, I might make the switch permanently. I'd hate to have to deal with terminal all that much if I can avoid it though.

Haha, it looks like they're just experimenting with some social media elements on OCN... can't blame them for trying, but I doubt I would ever use the like button in these forums.

Back on topic: From my experience, Steam works near-perfectly through Wine. Source-based games run especially well through Wine, but YMMV on performance... on my 9600gt, I can run CS:S, DOD:S, TF2, L4D, L4D2, etc. on medium graphics settings with very playable FPS rates.
I've only tried Skype once on my wife's netbook (32bit), and it worked without any issues.
I've never tried Xfire through Wine, but it looks like others have had very bad results.

This site is a very good resource on checking how applications run through wine: http://appdb.winehq.org/
It usually also contains workarounds for very common issues that other users experience.

Back on Xfire: although it doesn't look like the Xfire application is a legitimate option, there is an Xfire plugin for Pidgin that worked very well the last time I tried it.
Check out http://gfireproject.org/

Last, but not least: learning the CLI goes a long way in troubleshooting and getting things to work the way you want them to. Nothing is worse than searching Google for copy-and-paste commands when you don't actually know what you're telling your machine to do. I've been there, and it's much more frustrating than just learning the CLI.

i approve of this post been subbed to her channels for awhile, she hasnt posted much useful stuff lately though

AND on the subject of duel booting, you wouldnt even have to touch your current drives... you could just get a cheap thumb drive and do that, or even an external hdd, both would work as long as your system supported usb boot devices OR you could do what ive done in the past and throw an old school pata 80 or 40g hdd in, change your boot order to boot from that first, install grub on that drive and throw linux on... that way, if you want to just rock windows for awhile, you can just change your boot order back and it wont even know that there is a drive with grub in your system

really as long as you choose the advanced partition stuff when you install most linux distros, its kinda hard to screw up and nuke your system as long as you pay attention to which drive you put your mount points on lol and you can throw grub on the same drive so if you ever get tired of the set up, you can just take the drive out of your system and it will be like it was never there.... if grub is on the same drive you put in just for linux, then you will still have your windows boot loader on your windows drive

virtual machines are great for toying around with stuff... but honestly, i run linux in a vm at school and on dedicated machines at home... the differences REALLY is night and day :/ even problems that you wouldnt think are caused by a VM really are...
Kinda meh now...

i like the cli, if it is not appearent, 90% of the advice and information i gave out here in this thread alone was command line

even if it wasn't the fastest or "easiest" way, i want to get him use to the cli, cause it will come in handy later on.

about the easiest way to learn the cli imho, is to break your system, or try to do everything you can from it in the first 2 or 3 months from cli.

and some of the commands are interchangeable with windows thru cprompt, or they are similarily setup in syntax, cause even windows realized the power of the cli long ago, they didn't get rid of it just hid it deep, behind dazzle.

the whole getting the directory associated with a music player, that is a new one on me, i've never heard any one doing anything quite like that

as for music players, typical what works and setup correctly the first time around is what i use, amorak and xmms work fine for me atm, but if a update gets wonky on me and fails to continue to work "fine".

another thing you can try out, it is sorta a all in one type program, xbmc.

at its core it is xine based, and i do believe ubuntu has it in it's repo's or you will need to go to its site and add its ppa (similar how we did the kubuntu backports ppa, they will have directions on how to do this there.)

i use it to organize my movies/pictures/audio, once you get the hang of it, it has site scrappers on it, to grab information about the movie or music file, if the filename is formated decently enough for it, but it doesn't require a specific naming structure typically for movies, i put them in folders like so:

movie_name (year produced)

and for music:

artist (main folder)
album_name (sub-folder)
file name is setup like:
01.mp3
02.mp3

or
track_1.mp3
track_2.mp3

if obtained thru itunes or thru ripping of the actual cd, the id3 tags should be constructed correctly, so it will just read that information, grab album art from the internet.

i'm prolly over stating xbmc or making it sound complicated so i will be quiet, check it out, it is a nice program tho

I've not had any problem installing or running Skype. Steam isn't too hard to get working. The games, however, are another issue.
