Been playing civ since civ 1, and even messed about with the old/original linux freebie game sid stole it from... come to think of it played all the call to powers as well... good stuff...

anywho, civ 5 is the most accessable civ game to date (outside of the console version)... this is good and bad, as it is easier to get into, but lacks some of the nueance of the previous games. Large and huge maps are fairly slow to turn through if your rig is lacking, dx11 looks pretty nice, and at this point most the rubbish code has had the cracks papered up to survive a couple hours between crashes.

errmm, likes:

pretty, nice score, early game is good, ability to adjust game play style from slow (old school) to fast past (run through a game in about 4 hours) modes... very flexible, lots of replay

dislikes:

ai still a mess, ai still lacks combined arms or ability to identify choke points, harder difficulties = computer cheats (cash, research agreements it cant afford), which is sorta sad, policy changes are (to me) not as good as the cultural boundries of civ 4, policy changes (outside of patronage) effect little in the way of how you will play your civ... ie.. you pick your victory path in the early game and play to it, and no flipping towns through culture... spys are gone... again, its an easier game to play... not bad, in fact its a great game, just not the best civ/sim game it could of been.

God I could go on and on. Let me break it down a little better. If you have never played a Civ game before you will most likely thoroughly enjoy Civ 5. I you are a big fan of Civ and what they have done with the last 4 games and Colonization (even though that had issues in and of itself) you will probably loathe the game just like I did. There are lots of threads around explaining the problems and unsatisfactory changes they made from 4 to 5. I have explained in detail the reasons on these threads. A little searching and you should be able to find all those reasons from me and many other members here.

Edit: The poster above me did a good job at summing up most of the issues. But there are more problems than he let on to. I have a pretty decent sig rig and it plays like garbage on huge maps. Even with my 1366 setup with the same OC's it still ran like garbage on huge maps. You pay extra for another civilization (Babylon I believe) and you can't even use it in the god damned multiplayer! Don't even get me started on the LAN optimization of that game, it's ridiculous. Sid made the game much much more accessible but lost a lot of hardcore fans like me I'm thinking.

Off topic something that scares me is the new Total War: Shogun 2... I have been reading about it and looking at SS and it almost looks like another one of my favorite strategy series is doing the same thing. I am very sad face. I love Total War games and I own every single one, along with Civ I own all of them and love them all.

I loved CivIV and was very excited about CivV... but I was disappointed. See above.
