First AMD Build (for friend, suggestions?) >$800

Thread Starter
Hey guys, this is my first AMD build so I feel a little out of my element since I have always done high end Intel builds and know what hardware I like to go with.
Here is what I have so far and feel free to swap in, swap out, do a complete revamp of the list or what have you. He said he would like to stay in the $700-800 range, no monitor needed and I told him I would give him suggestions for a mouse/keyboard but to really make his own decision on it (can still add in your suggestions as well if you want, I haven't put a keyboard/mouse into this build yet). For the CPU, I've heard you could unlock a fourth core with the triple-core cpus, so I put in one of each in case this is a good idea to go with the triple-core to say more money as well.

CPU #1 $160
CPU #2 $77
Mobo $100
PSU $110
RAM $65
GPU $180
HDD $50
Heatsink $30

Thanks guys

Edit: Forgot to say he games, hence the gpu but right now it looks like he only plays WoW and we are going to be rejoining an EQ server that is starting from scratch so nothing really graphics intensive

These are the parts that I would go with:

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=955_phenom_ii_x4-_-19-103-808-_-Product
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138193&cm_re=biostar_ta890fxe-_-13-138-193-_-Product
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207007&cm_re=xfx_650-_-17-207-007-_-Product
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=spinpoint_f3-_-22-152-185-_-Product
Ram: The RAM you have is fine
GPU: Stick with the one you've got
Heatsink: Stick with the one you've got

Total: ~$680 after rebates

I wouldn't get a dual core or a tri core and hope for it to unlock because it doesn't always work. I would also go with the 955be instead of the 965be because it's the same cpu with just a different multiplier.

Your PSU is overkill for that build. The one I picked out is a very good unit and it comes out to be $69 after the rebate. And the Samsung hard drive I picked out is faster than the one you had listed.

The motherboard you have has no mosfet heatsinks on it, and that can be a serious problem when running a 125W CPU, especially when trying to overclock. The one I picked out has the 890FX chipset and can overclock like crazy. It holds the current world record for clock speed with the chip I listed.

Definitely do not pair that board with x4 965, but there are much better, more reliable better choices than that 870A board (which I wouldn't trust one bit for OC-ing 125W processors), and for less price. i.e. ASUS M4A79XTD EVO.
Go with 955, counting promo gift card it's much cheaper and OCs similarly anyway.

For hard drive, definitely invest in [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3S5S0"]F3 1TB[/ame] for $62, or [ame="http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=HD-HD502HJ"]F3 500GB[/ame] for $48.99. Both are better.
Definitely never buy Hyper 212+ off Newegg, $37 shipped is just a ripoff and you could get something better for the price. Not that Hyper 212+s aren't good or cheap though. If you [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YPH0"]buy it on Amazon[/ame] for just $28.43 shipped, it's more worth it.

If you're not as interested in GPU, there's a great combo for GTS 450 + Antec BP-550+ modular for $165, $155 AR

If you want a cheaper mobo than the one I listed (but still high quality), I would suggest you go with the one suggested above. Also, like mentioned above, if you shop around you can find cheaper prices than newegg offers on certain items (heatsink, HDD, etc.)

For the board, I'd pony up the extra 10 bucks from the MSI, and snag the ASRock 880g e3, great mid range board. Also the 870 e3 is quite a deal for the more budget minded!
*edit* Now I shall run and hide before xd lays down the power phase laws!! =)

Here is my current revision (and thanks so much for the help so far guys)

CPU $77 (I think I'd like to stick with the x3 to save more money?)
Mobo $89 ($15 MIR not included)
RAM $65
HDD $65
GPU/PSU $165 ($10 MIR not included)
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YPH0"]Heatsink[/ame] $28

Total: $490

Any case suggestions? I was thinking of getting a Cooler Master or Lian Li
