Once manufacturers see that ASUS got away with a 3 slot design, they will start making 3 slot cards aswell, and then it will eventually become standard.

I think triple slot makes a lot of sense for the average user. Most people only have one card and don't really need all of their slots anyways. I think a triple slot design with superior cooling makes sense. As mentioned earlier, if you are the type of person wanting to cram 3 of these into a rig then you certainly have the means to find alternative cooling solutions.

The "average user" isn't interested in spending $500-600 on a GPU. 3-slot cards are a very niche product, and have no business existing, for the most part.

Asus didn't start this 3 slot stuff. It's been around from aftermarket cooling and companies like sapphire and much more. Why is everyone making such a big deal now. Last gen we saw 5870/5970 and 470/480 in 3 slots
post #47 of 68
There was 3-slot 4870x2..
Besides, even with mAtx board there's one bottom slot left open and a lot of MB's have pci1x slot ABOVE pci-e slot, so there's no need for moaning here. 3-slot cards can be really good at keeping temps at bay and most important thing, they can be quiet.

I would have sold my current 580 and ordered this one when available if it came with more RAM...

For $500+, I dunno... I think if I had $500 towards a card, at that point I'd continue saving up for something better: HD 6990 or GTX 590.

It's debatable, whether 6990 or 590 are better, i'd say 580 is better, unless 590 is actual 580x2, but even then 580 probably end up being better when it comes to actual gameplay.
