Where to locate Drivers?

Thread Starter
Ok, i have an Inspirion 1720 dell laptop. It came with Windows Vista, i just installed a copy of win 7 pro 64bit. I tried to install the dell disc with the drivers and was told that the video drivers are only for vista.

1) How or where can i go to find what type of GPU i have on my laptop?? Its been several years since i bought it. Would it be in the BIOS?

2) Where can i go to get the driver??

It might be in the BIOS, actually on a Dell that might be a very good possibility.

For drivers, Dells can sometimes be strange. I would get your service tag off of the back and go to their download page, try their drivers first, see what works and what doesn't, and go from there.

A way to see what GPU you've got is GPUZ. Google it! Great little utility.

If you get the info from GPUZ, you should be able to go straight to ATi or nVidia and download the drivers from them.

Another option would be to get a good driver update program. I've used Driver Reviver and Driver Genius, both have served me very nicely.

Best of luck mate!

Go here. Click 'I'm looking for Drivers and Downloads'. When prompted enter your system's Service Tag number (this is found on the bottom of your laptop). Underneath Warranty Information in the left column of links click Warranty Status. Once the page has loaded, click the Original Configuration tab. This will list all of the parts that were originally in the system.

With you system tag entered, you will also have the option of downloading all of the system drivers directly from Dell.

Using the Dell site will list the Vista drivers, won't they? It seems he already has that and it seems to be an issue. He should probably try going to the manufacture's site directly or use one of those driver programs.
