First time builder and new to AMD

Thread Starter
So here is the back story... I am currently typing this on a 2005ish hp pavillion slimline computer that I have tried to keep going for the last 6 years. While it wasnt the most cost effective, I have replaced a number of easy access parts, such as the processor (went from celeron m to pentium m ooo!), but 2gb of ram rather than 512mb and even managed to squeeze in an old ati x1300 card in the ONE pci slot. If not anything overly significant in terms of power, it got me excited about the fact that I could actually do things under the cover of my PC.

Needless to say, it is time to upgrade. After a bit of research I am still torn between the OEM easiness and the lure of custom computer building. As I have never experienced AMD I find myself wanting to try them out.

As for the purposes of this new computer, I wish to make it last as long as my previous one. I do mild to moderate gaming, with games usually being about 3 years old (not into the new stuff), a bit of graphic design and number crunching for my current college courses (SPSS stats program).

Now for the part you have been waiting for... why am I posting this? Well, again, I am tempted to just buy a OEM box for convenience but I think I might get more future proofing out of building my own rig and I LOVE building things and working with my hands (I do all of my own car maintenance, home improvement, etc. )

My budget is looking to be in the sub 600 range
Here are my options:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120677589110&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Now I know some of you have reservations about gateway, especially one that is refurbished, and I tend to follow that feeling. However, it is tempting...

Other than that, I have explored both this site and a few others and the build I am tenatively looking at goes something like this:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz (I am fascinated with overclocking and want to do some research and try it some day)

As far as optical drives go I dont care too much about the quality as I usually just make ISOs and use daemon tools to play games and such...
The OS I am looking at is the OEM Windows 7 as I plan to keep the computer until it dies.

*NOTE* I apologize to anyone who is frustrated with this post. I realize there are a lot of people asking about builds and I could easily just get my opinions from responses to those threads but I really like to have live feedback relevant to my situation, so if anyone would like to comment, I would greatly appreciate it!

well i think your thoughts in the second half of your original post really answers your desire to make a DIY rig. And your selection components is alright, thus far, but you also need to tack on a videocard for gaming. depending on your needs you should get something like an ATI HD6850 or a nvidia GTX460 to be somewhat futureproof. (this will tack another $200 on to your budget)

but if you are too busy and you need something ASAP, you could always go the prebuilt route, but like you said, there will be no feeling of accomplishment.

Build your own - you can make a far better rig for the money, and be able to service it later. Unlike say, HP, that generally resorts to some oddball PSU or wierd screw locations for their motherboards so that you have to buy parts from them at 5-10 times the price.

ah yes, the GPU part... Seeing as I am interested in only mild gaming I wouldnt need something too crazy, but yes, my budget is flexible when it comes to that. I suppose writing it all down and reading it was better for me in making my decision than just thinking it over.

all looks good except couple of things :
change to this RAM its 35$ AR and can do 8-8-8-24 1600 Mhz no problem , best budget ram right now
and to this PSU its 45$ after rebate and promo code and can handle crossfire 5770\6850 in future
for video card , depends what resolution u play if its 1600x1080 and lower then HD 5770 110$ AR if highter then HD 6850 160$ AR , both great cards good luck with ur build
btw if u want a budget case , just somewhere to put ur hardware in then this Sunbeam will do the job , bottom mounted psu and 5 fans for 25$ AR

Total cost of your (non-full) build: $485
Total cost of prebuilt: $480 - Not a very good price since it's the lower-end 1035T, you can't overclock at all, generic mem, weaker vid card.

For $410, my recommendation:
Phenom II x4 955 - $149
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - $89, $74 AR
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 - $50, $35 AR (For $45 those generics are ripoffs - this kit is cheaper than any generic kit and overclocks decently)
Samsung F3 1TB - $63 from either [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3S5S0"]Amazon[/ame] or [ame="http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=HD-HD103SJ"]Superbiiz[/ame]
HEC Blitz case - $35 after promo code
Gigabyte GTS 450 + Antec BP 550 Plus Modular - $165, $155 AR
Phenom II gift card - -$10
Total cost of my build: $541, $501 AR
Nearly the same price, but was the video card ever there before? wink.gif
