OpenGL is an api strictly for video, mainly accelerated video (2D or 3D).

So what you should say is that linux needs to either get DirectX or a package similar to DirectX allowing companies to freely code for the system without having to worry about updating their code every time the system updates.
True enough. I'll be more descriptive next time.

I correct everyone on that, people need to understand what DX is before they make decisions on how to compare it. This happens in professional reviews too, people do things like "DX10 vs OpenGL" and that's just wrong.

Just don't expect to get a new game and expect to play it perfectly. That is one of the main reasons why Ubuntu is not my primary OS

I bought an Nvidia card for the specific purpose of gaming, but as the open source drivers are not mature enough for decent framerates, you are stuck with the closed-source binary. That would mean you are going to be better off with a DX10 only GTX 260.

For the person that asked about ReactOS, it released a new version- and improvements are to wine go upstream.

Anything with "craft" in the name will suck your life away, regardless of what OS you play it on.

Submitted for your consideration: World of Warcraft runs virtually flawlessly in Linux. The only real "flaw" is that Blizzard sets all the graphics settings to their lowest values and you have to turn them up. And everything else Blizzard breaks, but those aren't really Wine issues...

Depends on the game. The new Xinput2 patch works WONDERS for mouse movement in a lot of games and hopefully will be integrated soon. However, that's just one patch. My crysis thread has a specific patch that does double buffering fixes. This helps crysis run, don't know any other games, but for crysis you need that single patch.

It really comes down to why that game won't work and if there is a known patch.

So, what u guys think, does gaming on linux have a future? When will we see game developers releasing big games for linux? and will we ever see it? personally i'd love to be able to game on linux with no need to emulate windows environment, cause this approach just wrong, although results that Wine was able to reach are truly impressive, i can imagine how many people would switch to linux if there were at least couple modern big game titles available, i really wish there was a way to push developers to start making decent games natively for linux, i remember over a year ago there were rumors around the web that valve is working on steam for linux, but unfortunately it wasn't true, sad, cause that could be a good start.
