AMD 6 Core? - Page 2

I would just stay with the cpu you have right now. I only upgraded to a 1055T because I had a dual core and wanted either 4 core, but during that time 6 core came out and I got it for like 115 new first day it came out from TD.

I was thinking I would stay pretty long with that cpu, but I want a bulldozer already and just like most here in OCN it looks like I love upgrading very often

I did get a 6 core for a friend who is a standard user who barely knows how to use a computer just because he wanted a computer to last him like 5 years... Maybe a 6core cpu will do great in the next 6 years. But if you plan to upgrade often I would just wait since a quad core is enough for gaming.

Today i upgraded to the 1090T from my 965@ 4.1ghz, And so far it does make stuff faster for me, But that's because i run alot of background apps in the background while i game.

And it is on sale for 200$

It also depends how far your current cpu will overclock like say 3.8ghzs vs 4ghzs or higher i see a nice difference in fps with ony that 200mhzs jump when i tested those 2 clocks with my 965,

Six cores usely can get 4ghzs and over 4ghzs most of the time, With the x4s you can get a really high clock x4 or you can get one that maxes out at 3.7 and 3.8, Pretty much why i went from a 940black which did 3.7-3.8 to a 965 that does 4ghzs+ about a year ago and i saw a nice fps difference.

And i did it for the cooler temps which i was told temps gonna be higher or the same.. And for the better overclocking, Right now i have the 1090t @ 4.1ghzs with ony 1.45v which so far is stable and temps are much lower, For my 965 i had to pump 1.52 or sometimes 1.55v into it for it to be stable at 4.1ghzs. Will try 4.2 or 4.3 later on, on the 1090t.
If all you do is game than the x4 is fine, But if you do more than gaming at the same time or encoding something when gaming than a x6 is the way to go

This build is all maxed how i wanted it and now waiting for bulldozer but seems like it wont be out for months which why i went with a x6.

Same thing happen with going from 4gb of ram to 8gb i was told its not gonna make a difference but it did in all the games i play and just doing stuff on the desktop. And also really helps when a game has a memory leak which will eat over 4gb of ram which will crash if it runs out of ram which happen to me always but with 8gb of ram never happens.

I had read a review some where that states on average the AMD 6 core processors get 10-14 % performance in games over the x4 counterparts.

The performance increase from an X4 965 at 3.8GHz to an X6 1090T at 4.1GHz was definitely noticeable even to my wife (who doesn't play anything!), but only in Battlefield Bad Company 2. Nothing else changed besides my Windows Experience score (LOL). Oh and of course 3ds Max loved the upgrade but then again rendering can ALWAYS be faster and faster and faster. You just have to draw the line at your wallet.

Yes I updated firmware, i tried hot plugging it, reset bios with jumper, just that and dvd rom with parted magic disc in. achi, ide, everyting it just would not see the drive...it was there in bios but parted magic went through the loading motions ejected cd, then system just restarted. tried diff sata cables diff ports.....last time I just went to disk managment from my spare drive deleted the volumes on ssd, stuck parted magic in booted to it with just the ssd and it just did the erase no prob none of this disk has been placed in frozen state rubbish I did EXACTLY the same today and it would not have it, I think some of these vertex2 ssd have glitches.....maybe i should have tried diskpart....

Sounds like you should definitely bring this up with OCZ and see what they say. It's very possible they'll offer you an RMA under their nice warranty.

True, but yeah this particular review had them stock for stock, it wasn't the best I have read but it did give the impression that you will get a performance increase in games going from x4 to x6.

Well the way I see it is 1 core for the OS 1 for processes in the background and 4 for the games, I know that this isn't how it works but yeah.

Anyway, with current prices, hexacores are sweet deal.

What is wrong with having 6 cores? I just built a new PC and put a 1090T in it just to future proof it, and because I was upgrading from a dual core. 6 is better than a 4 cores, if you want to future proof your new build, that's just plain obvious. But I could understand if you were wanting to upgrade from a quad core.

Just because games don't utilize 6 cores now doesn't make it not worth upgrading to. And besides, I have a feeling the bulldozer and AM3+ mobo's will be VERY expensive, even months after the initial release date. It's just a hunch I have.

I'm hoping that my 1090T will be able to handle games just as well as the bulldozer CPU's in the near future. After reading all the posts in this thread, It makes the 1090T sound like it was a waste of money and a piece of garbage compared to the new bulldozer CPU's coming out... Thanks guys... lol

Nothing is wrong with 6 cores. Just the OP would be going from a really good quad to a very good x6 for maybe 15% improvement and a lot of cash. Going from an x2 to an x6 is a really big jump (or even huge depending on what x2).

No, just for where the OP was at and their other components their are better things to spend the money on. Futureproofing is impossible for anything more than about a year, maybe 18 months.

You felt that an x6 would be good for your needs and keep you set for a while, which is great. Don't let anything written to somebody else feel bad about your very nice build.
