Dead Psu

So I went to turn on my computer last night and was greeted with a bright flash of light, a loud pop, and a wonderful burning smell. That was the end of my Antec Earthwatts 650...I just hope It didn't take anything else with it.

I've already initiated RMA with Antec for the psu, but I am wondering if maybe I should think about upgrading to a different brand or if this was just a freak occurance?

At first I thought never again would I use Antec, but looking at the price of gold rated psu's, I decided maybe to wait out the RMA and save some money.

I know there can't be a way that I am at or above the rated specification for the design, and I have used the psu for over a year.

If your PSU is still under garuntee your other parts should be covered from damage from your PSU exploding,if it is sold as having features to prevent damage to components. If anything is damaged contact Antec emediately and see where you stand.Hopefully the inbuilt protection circuits would have prevented such damage, check motherbord and connectors for scorch marks etc.

All my components appeared to be ok, and I am not even sure if anything really turned on before the event happened. When it did occur it seems to happen at the exact moment I hit the power button.

I do not believe Antec carrys any kind of additional warranty for additional components. Everything except my cpu(lapped) is still under warranty from the manufacturer, so if I do have an issue I would likely just rma to them.

Antec typically makes pretty solid stuff. So Antec i a pretty safe company.

Also, all companies make "high end" and "low end" products. I think the earthwatts is there lower end line, but still pretty reliable.

I would just RMA it unless you plan on upgraded your desktop hardware any time soon.

Yeah I guess I may as well wait. I had placed an order for Sandy Bridge right the sunday before the news broke of the design flaw, which I had cancelled. So now I am just waiting it out for Ivy or Bulldozer, so my hardware will stay the same until then.

Unfortunately my only backup psu is too low power and not the right connectors...but I got an old am2 rig that should suite me for now.

Received new psu from Antec, very quick turnaround on the RMA. Psu did not take anything else with it and it's back up and running =).

Nope. Only thing I know of that may have a guarantee protecting other hardware are certain power protection products (AKA surge strips). Generally speaking all PC component manufacturers (all PSU brands included) have clauses in their warranty statements saying that warranty covers just failures of their unit and absolutely nothing else.
