First time builder please help!!!

Ok so i had a post up earlier last week and asked if when replacing my whole gateway fx6831-01 ( motherboard , gpu , psu, case) if i would still be able to use the hard drive, well as it turns out i replaced everything and the computer posts but it says that windows is trying to repair the drive ( due to new hardware) i have the new windows 7 cd in but its not letting me format and reinstall the os

Go into the bios and set the first boot device to the DVD drive, pop the disc in and hit a key to make it boot into the DVD. It should have no problem formatting the drive.

Is it an IDE or SATA drive?

it is a sata, i got it to work ( thanks for the help ) my next question, do i want to install windows on the 17gb partition or on the 1300+ gb space

I think Windows 7 needs more then 17 GB. Can you just repartition? Depends on your needs but I would say about 100 GB for Windows 7.

Delete the partitions and remake them, do you have data on them that you need? If you do, pop it in another computer and copy it off or something.

Why do you want a 17GB partition? I run all my drives as one large partition.

In Win7 setup delete all partitions and install on the free space, it will create a primary partition for the full available space. You will of course lose everything on the drive.

nothing that i can think of at all. my hardrive is from the gateway, on the [B]where do you want to install windows page[B] it says

Disk 0 unallocated space 100.0 mb / 100.0 mb free
Disk 0 Partition 1 17.0gb / 16.4 free (system)
Disk 0 Partition 2 1380.2 gb / 1380 free (primary)

You might not want that small of a partition but if you section off some space for OS and program you can format the OS and have your data stay on the drive.
