You might not want that small of a partition but if you section off some space for OS and program you can format the OS and have your data stay on the drive.
If its a bad virus you're formatting from its probably best to format the whole drive including the bootsector etc. Partitions for different OSes like a Linux partition is a common use. I used to partition but just use whole drives these days and switch which one boots.
