Need serious advice....

Thread Starter
I know this may be the oldest question on the forums, but I haven't found a clear, concise answer to make the decision:

I am running Win 7 on a 680i and a Core 2 Quad, 8 gigs of DRAM

On the on deck circle (right now, in my garage) sits a X58 Classified, i7 unlocked Processor and 8gb of DDR3 ram.

Will Win 7 boot successfully? Or will it be best to Ghost my HDD? I dont think the additional HDDs would matter, since they are pretty much storage drives anyway....

I need to know this quickly..... the tech geek inside me is raging....

It might boot, but its going to have issues. With a new motherboard you want a clean install.

I assume you are transferring machines for good right?
If so something I've tried and has worked when switching mobo's on similar platforms..
Try booting the hdd on the other rig in safe mode. If that works, uninstall all your old drivers, And install the new ones. Reboot...
Please dont flame me if you dont agree with my methods, Again I only do this when switching between similar platforms.

Firstly, why are you using 8GB of RAM with X58? It uses triple channel memory, and last time I checked you couldn't get sticks of RAM that are 2.66GB or 1.33GB

But it's very unlikely that it will boot anyway. What you'll want to do is back up anything on the drive you plan to install on, format, and install Windows with the new CPU/motherboard/RAM.

Yeah... this is my final build on this, any additional mods I would be doing is completing its water cooling process. I think after that, it may be a ultra high-end graphics card or Telsa. additionally I am adding a second GTX 465 on the new platform, so I won't see another major change in another 5 years.

That is why I asked the question buddy.... I have the Ghost software, but I need a reliable drive (not to sure on the current supply I have)to place Win 7 on until the operation is complete.

By the way I will be adding the PNY 1333MHz DDR3 memory, in matched pairs... I ran 8Gb before on a 64 bit OS, I would like to run that again.

Thanks for the hype-fast response guys, I have the replacement parts right now on the desk and the static strap on....

Don't run 8GB on a triple channel platform. Period. Grab another stick if you're running 2x4, or two sticks if you're running 4x2.

Lol static strap. I don't use them. Just touch a PSU while it's on for 1 second before you touch anything and you'll be fine.

it might boot, but its not worth it. its best to do a clean install. who knows what kind of problems you could run into in the future if you just swap out the boot drive.

edit: also as other have suggested dont use 2 or 4 sticks of ram, use 3 or 6. other wise you are running in dual channel when your board supports tripple channel

So you think 4gb is more than enough to run Win 7? Explain.

How about when I run FSX?

For now, until I find out your reasoning, I'll put 4gb on standby and just use two sticks. I am firing up my laptop to stay on with you guys as I put Isis under the proverbial knife.....

He's not saying to use 4GB of RAM, he's saying to use 6 or 12. X58 has a triple channel memory controller, so you'll be needing either 3 or 6 sticks of RAM.
