Cry me a river. Eventually merchant shipping will become armed again (directly or indirectly through 'security' consultants - remember Blackwater? ) and most of these pirates will end up as fish food.

Everyone thinks "oh those poor people, they lost their stuff".

Similarly, piracy, ie copyright infringement, isn't actually taking anything. The victim of copyright infringement doesn't actually lose anything (and don't give me the "every infringement is a sale lost" line, current studies into piracy can't even decide if it hurts or helps games more, there are cases where piracy helps spread the word about a game and it then sells better).

The reason people get so worked up about "semantics" is that "theft" implies that the victim was hurt, that something was stolen form them. Conversely, "copyright infringement" doesn't imply that at all. Like I said, the latest research into piracy hasn't even found conclusive evidence that piracy is harmful.

Sigh..... if you steal a car, you are TAKING a car from someone else. The piracy equivalent of acquiring a car would be illegally printing one using a high tech 3D printer from Toyota schematics you found online.

See how that's different than breaking into a dealership and driving off with a car? Or robbing your neighbor of their minivan? Piracy =/= theft.
You need a dictionary.

I'm aware of the flawed analogy, but people on OCN seem to love bad analogies.

Still, you are taking something that isn't yours, it is theft. It isn't in physical form, but the files and the game itself isn't yours.

But that's the thing, you're not "taking" anything. You're duplicating without permission.

from dictionary.com:

copyright infringement:

noun
a violation of the rights secured by a copyright

theft:

–noun
1.
the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny.
2.
an instance of this.
3.
Archaic . something stolen.

Notice how theft includes "taking" and "carrying away"? Elements that are not present in the illegal duplication of materials. Next time you might consider using a dictionary yourself before calling others out.

Whether it be "theft" or "copyright infringement", companies need to stop hurting the paying customer.

If I were to photocopy a book in the library and bring it home is that theft? No. Is it illegal (assuming it is copyrighted)? Yes.

Is that a better analogy for you?

You just keep cheering for DRMs (you know who you are). What goes around comes around. You're only helping DRMs become more and more draconic, and one day even you will think it's too much. But by then it would have been too late.

Also, no wonder PS3 gaming is dying with piracy so rampant If only it had something like steam for PC gaming

Lol, it's actually true. A lot of electronic music producers wouldn't exist without piracy.. it's pretty ironic.

Actually the library i am a member allows you to photocopy any book. The problem with books lies more in the references. You can quote any part of a book as long as you mention the source.

If you copy one book you steal ideas, if you copy 100 books you are conducting research.
