Build for a friend <$400!! no gpu

Thread Starter
Hmm, I'm venturing here in hopes of some expert amd people.

My friend called me up and wants a build for less than 500 FIRM. I am going to give him my 450 for 100 or so, so let's say 400 left to play. He has an OS, and wants to play SC2 as good as he can for that price. I assume my 450 will do him fine, since he's coming from integrated/p4 era.

Here's what I have so far after leeching other topics:
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147023
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152181 f3 500gb, he doesn't even need 500, but it's the best without spending $65?
MB+RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.594957
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103817
PSU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139017

Comes out around 360, which after my card around 460. He has no interest/knowledge of future overclocking, just wants it to play games. Oh, and I'm not against used parts, would just prefer a new PSU for reliability concerns.

Get an X3 and unlock the 4th core, IMO.

Otherwise everything looks solid.

i'd go with better ram as 4gb of ddr3 is so cheap these days. i would go with G.Skill, Mushkin, or Corsair personally. The difference between 1333 and 1600 is so microscopic, undetectable in games. Go for $40 1333 DDR3 since your friend has no intention of OCing. Timings also make no difference in games, it's all hype and ego/e-peen. No need to get cas 7 or 8. Just go with the standard 4gb of 1333 9-9-9-24.

other comments:

harddrive is solid. i believe X4 customer award winner. i have that one and the 1TB one.

mobo is not bad.

case is not bad, but i'd go with an Antec 300 for $50 instead. a matter of preference though.

psu: the older generation of Corsair psus were better than the builder series. people seem to be half and half on the new builder series. it's your call.

yup x3 Athlon for 77$ is better option since its nearly 100% chance to unlock the 4th core , for psu maybe take this one at 30$ AR , for case this one at 25$ AR and for HDD take this one
at 29$

I may be making a bad suggestion, but have you thought about a seagate 1tb hdd? It has 32mb cache

woops after reading your post again, I saw that you need less than $65. Oh well I tried!

I'm starting to wonder if the athlon 640 would be a better choice?

Must... prevent... generic memory purchase!

KAME-HAME-HAAAAA
HEC Blitz - $35 after promo, free shipping
Phenom II x2 555 - $90 (though L3 can help with framerates, I think Starcraft is generally CPU intensive so more cores would actually be more optimal)
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO - $89, $74 AR
Antec Neo ECO 400W - $45 shipped
OCZ Special Ops 1600 CL8 - $40, $30 AR (or Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 $50, $30 AR if you're impartial to OCZ)
Samsung F3 500GB - $35 if member on MWave (free membership), $40 if not
Total cost (OCZ RAM option): $334, $309 AR
555, better RAM, great case, better PSU, same hard drive for so much cheaper. Go for it.

SC2 requires mass GPU Memory for best gameplay along with 2gig of memory alone (not counting Windows usage) I'm using Nvidia Geforce ENGT240 1gb GDDR5 and its running Ultra graphics great but all has weakness lol.. 4 cores does help as well (using Phenom 9650) with 4gb DDR2 1066 on Win 7 x64. Hope you have a good GPU! (btw 256mb of GPU memory barely cuts)

i have tried sc2 on a 555 (on 2 cores) and on an athlon II 630, both of which are VERY close to the 2 processors you mentioned. they both handle SC2 and general computer use with zero issues or slowdowns. i have over 1,000 league games so i'm not just basing this off 30 games.
