SLI'd 460's

Thread Starter
Week or so ago I got my GTX460's to play nice with the SLI hack...

Anyway, I've noticed one idles at 50c and the other at 36c. Is this normal for SLI, or is one getting bad airflow? Looking at GPU-Z they have the same fan speeds, same clocks and same voltages.
Lot of peeps have this prob. Could be the space between the cards not being enough. Which card runs hotter? My bet is on the top card. Now, that could be an airflow issue, but it could also be a issue of the top card does the majority of work. If this inequity is at idle, that seems to be more an airflow issue.

Since you are running more than one monitor the main card does not downclock. YOu may want to adjust the clocks manually. Somebody will tell you it is so to prevent flickering but it is bs. I have mine downclocked and no flickering.

EDIT: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AIRFLOW!!!!

Both cards have a slot between them, so there is space for the top card. I believe the bottom card is the one getting hot. And it seems they aren't downclocking, hah. Is there a way to make it downclock in 2D mode only?
Very easy using MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision. Simply make overclock (or underclock) profiles, go to settings, profile tab, set 2D profile you made earlier and set 3D (or leave it on auto for stock speeds)

I bet it does, because the top card in a pair always runs hotter than the bottom card, even when all other things are held equal (clocks, volts, etc).

Your point is still good though ... generally with multiple monitors hooked up to the top card, that card will stay in low-power 3d mode all the time (400MHz core on my cards), whereas the bottom card will go down to 2d mode (51 core).

IOW, the multiple monitors is exacerbating a situation that always exists w/two cards thumb.gif

Also, the stock VID on the top card could conceivably be higher.

Actually this is correct. Running two monitors right now my first 460 won't downclock and stays in Low-3D clocks with 3D Voltages.(400/2000 Clocks) It's been this way since 259.xx drivers and Nvidia doesn't intend to change it.

Top Card: 46C
Bottom Card: 28C

If I switch the second monitor to the bottom card, it raises to 42C while the Top card lowers to 30C.

I'm not running dual monitors so I don't have this problem although the temp on my primary card rises whenever I watch youtube videos. Other than that, the temperatures are virtually the same.

ATM running water cooling so don't have this problem, but before water I cured this problem by using 57cfm fan blowing sideways into my graff cards like this:

14C difference cannot be solely based on air flow. It is definitely about load balancing between cards which something something that you shouldn't worry about.
