Signs of a bad NIC?

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, long time no see.

Recently, my internet speeds have been getting slower and slower on one PC over my network. It sometimes drops the connection, and upon restart will go at full speed for a while and then drop down from full (~25 Mb/s down, ~3 Mb/s up) to the speed I am currently using (.23 Mb/s down, 1 Mb/s up)
Both of those results from my favorite server on speedtest.net

On my ethernet connected machines, its constantly >20 Mb/s so the internet connection itself is fine. iPods and laptops get >15 Mb/s constantly as well.

The only thing I can conclude is that I have a bad NIC. It's a Linksys something, pretty old and wireless G. I got it second hand from someone.

Replacing it isn't an issue, but I would like to make sure this is a NIC problem instead of something else.

Network: I have 3 Linksys WRT-54GS routers with DD-WRT Mega on them. They are configured to all broadcast with 1 SSID so that the client connects to whichever one has the best signal. Routers all check out so I don't think it's a problem here.

TL;DR network dropping and slow speed == signs of a bad NIC?

What's your signal and negotiated speed at the moment?
If you have that many devices to confirm, you might as well swap the NIC and see.

There's other options within the realm of possibilities such as congestion, interference or deauth, yet the NIC is hands down the most likely scenario in this case.

Well, cain is saying that I have a signal strength of 0 dBm which seems suspicious to me because normally it says about -71 dBm. I don't know exactly what negotiated speed is, not very network savvy. Please explain

If you look in task manager or mouse over the connection status in your system tray (or view the "status" page for the adapter) the readout would generally read 36-54 mbps depending on signal strength. Crappy reception would net anywhere from 1-24 or so.

Since your card isn't even reporting back proper values, the first step I would take is replacing the NIC, or at least try one of the current NICs you have in the machine that's having the problems.

It's fluctuating between 54 and 48 Mb/s

I'm a floor up about 15 feet diagonally to the router that I'm connected to a floor down. I don't have any more PCs that use wireless, just this one. All the rest are laptops/ipods

Imma just order a new NIC from newegg and see if that helps me out.

Thank you smile.gif
