Bought my first DSLR

Thread Starter
I just bought a Canon Rebel XT. I know that it is by no means a new camera or anything but it is better than using my phones camera. I just turned 15 so I'm not made of money. If you could give me 3 tips what would they be?

Congrats on the purchase!

It's a great camera and you will really enjoy it.

What glass do you have so far? I'm assuming the 18-55mm Kit Lens?

The kit lens, 18-55mm. What would be a decent lens for general shots under $200?

I'd say go pick up a 50mm f/1.8, amazing lens for the price. I love mine.

  • Learn Manual Exposure techniques: Exposure triangle, depth of field, stop action, high ISO image noise
  • Learn composition: Rule of Thirds, Golden Ratio, etc
  • Don't worry about gear: The Rebel XT is old but still very capable

Depends on what you mean by general shots. The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens for shallow depth of field, and its focal point is good for most shots. The only issue is that 50mm is a bit tight indoors (hence why I just picked up a 28mm f/1.8 to compliment my 50mm).

Personally, I'd ditch that 18-55mm for an IS version of that lens. In addition to IS, they redid the optics on the newer kit lens. The 50mm is a great lens, but as a beginner, the 18-55mm IS will offer you more versatility. Even though I prefer shooting with all primes myself, I definitely wouldn't suggest that idea to someone on a tight budget. Primes are fun and give excellent IQ, but since they can't zoom you'll lack a lot of versatility esp if they're your only lens.

However, if you've the money for both the 18-55mm IS AND a 50mm f/1.8, go for it!
