[HELP] Phenom II X4 B55 Overclock - Page 2

Usually on MSI boards; it could theoretically happen on any unheatsinked 4+1 phase, just happens on MSI the most. Quality control ftl. It would happen with unlocked cores because unlocking the cores seriously steps up the power requirement and you approach the limits of the VRMs. Multiplier should be fine on black edition processors. Besides, with generic 1333 CL9 G.Skill I doubt you could go very far if you use the FSB/bus clock to overclock.

Use the multiplier ie 200x20 to get to 4ghz...it should work on stock volts

Unless you get lucky and get a really good batch

So, what I should do then for optimum performance and safety is to just re-lock the cores and overclock the 2 cores to 4.0 by upping the multiplier to 20 (200 x 20)??

I do have a question though. This board is rated for all AM3, so since there are some Phenom II's that are at 125W, wouldn't it be fine to unlock the extra cores, since the 2 extra unlocked cores would work just like it was an X4?

If not, what a bummer. What I should do then is just get a new board/system to unlock this CPU with and get an X4 for this board and build a new system? Or will even an X4 have problems with this board?

What should I watch out for to stay away from 4+1? Is a 4-pin board power cord an indicator that it is 4+1?

Quick question, sorry for kind of hijacking the thread but I'm in a similar situation.

I have the same cpu and also an MSI motherboard. The MSI 890GXM-G65.

I'm having trouble getting my unlocked 555 to go over 3.7 GHz. Should I relock the cores and overclock using 2 cores?

I'm interested to see if this is why I have to up the vcore so much to only get 3.7GHz.

I'm at 1.47V ish for only 3.7GHz.

Thanks!

*EDIT: OH SHIET

I is still unsafe because even at stock speeds with the 4 cores unlocked...I used SIS soft Sandra and i found that the processors peak power is like 200+watts...now just imagaine the number after you get to 1.5v to get the chip at 4ghz...it goes down hill from there...plus i moved one of the temp probes that i have from my nzxt sentry lx fan controller and placed it on the mosfets and the temps were alarming when in quad config...60c+

just don't try to run a 1055t at 4GHZ on a lower end board. Problem solved.

So any 4 core processor is not going to work properly with this MSI board?
Not necessarily, 95W ones should work pretty fine (i.e. Athlon II, 95W Phenom II)

Do they have Phenom II x4s at 95Ws?
