[HELP] Phenom II X4 B55 Overclock - Page 3

Yes, but they are usually only sold at lower speeds (i.e. 2.8Ghz) and binned differently. The Phenom II x2 consumes a closer 80W at stock, therefore it's much closer to a 125W when unlocked to an x4, than a 95W. 2 integer cores add 45W, so assuming the 2 existing integer cores consume 45W and the FPU/L3 cache/IMC consume the other remaining 35W, it's still ~125W TDP.

Even 95W TDP processors have blown up MSI boards due to VRM failure (I actually have 1 or 2 examples of this listed), but this is on a much, much more limited basis than with 125W TDP processors.

Thanks, that cleared a lot!

xd_1771,

So I will be fine if I re-lock the cores and OC? To what Ghz do you think that's safe to do it on with this MSI board?

Thanks for all the help.

AND MAN, that sucks to hear, but I'm glad I was told...

You should be fine, at 80W stock TDP and I assume just slightly above 95W OCed, it'd be at least safer, but do pay attention to the mosfet temp sensor on HWMonitor or so. Just stay below 1.5V.
Sadly even the highest end MSI boards (yes, including 890FXA-GD70) can often be affected by crummy mosfets. I expect this to change with 990 chipset series boards, an MSI 990FX board was recently shown to have a 24-phase digital VRM. I'm not sure if this is for the 8 cores or that MSI really needs so much VRMs to make up for their crummyness (lol ) but that sounds good to me.

You are confusing TDP with power consumption. See this article...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_design_power

Basically TDP refers to the amount of heat that the cooling system must dissipate.

Also what are the mosfets rated at for temperature? Probably more than 60C.

Just saying. Every time someone on this forum unlocks a dual core to a quad core the alarm bells start ringing. Yet I am running on a fully stable unlocked and overclocked X2 chip. It is even a C2 revision chip. Now I am not going to keep pushing it till the mosfets blow, but it does show that an X2 can be unlocked and OC'd on a 4+1 board. Just not sure about doing it on an MSI board. But we need some balance in these discussions.
