My First HTPC (Build Log) - Page 2

Sticky, sticky, stutter stutter. i3 with IGP is the way to go. Yes you might be able to find better deals for an i3/MB combo. I just posted that as a reference. I use that combo frequently. I really cant wait for Llano, but until then, I always include a discrete GPU with an AMD build, or go i3. A few dollars now is well worth a ton of headaches later. If not, then just get a cheap laptop to do the same thing. And lets not forget, what might be capable is not the same as doing it well.

Dont get me wrong, you have a nice little HTPC, and that is one of my favorite cases. Very roomy. But you will find that adding a GPU will help. By using an Athlon II with its stock heatsink, and used that extra $50 for a 5550.

Can you expand my knowlege a little bit? I assumed a GPU helped take a load off of the CPU, and that since the onboard GPU as well as the CPU were decent that they could easily handle the load of the video between them.

I had issues with my 785g have stutter and lag problems when I was using it with an AM2 x2 (2.4 GHz BE-2400). I got a 4350 and that was taken care of.
A few months later I got a Sempron 140 and put it in the same system and took the 4350 out and the onboard played everything just fine (HDTV, HD streams, HULU, Netflix, DVD (but no bluray, I don't have any)). I now have a 210e (a 45w Athlon II) in it since the Sempron seemed to be running at 100% most of the time (but had no lagging or stutter) and I got a good deal on it.

On board graphics uses shared resources while discrete uses its own. Yes, it frees up the CPU. The nice thing about IGP on the i3, or even better, Sandybridge processors, it works just like discrete graphics, freeing up system resources. Well here, read this. They do it better. I have solved many problems and complaints by the simple addition of a discrete HDCP card. And here is an interesting article for the i3.

And I am not an Intel fanboy, but I am waiting patiently for Llano.

If they have not/ can not fix the 24p issue it is worthless. With the extra money you spend on that system you can go AMD w/ a ati gpu. Even if you do not need 24p why not go the way that you won't have the issue in the future if needed?

Geez, thats some old stuff. Bluray automatically up-converts, and most DVDs are up-converted to 1080p 50 or 60 anyway.
