Today we are pleased to announce the availability of the Release Candidate for Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (formerly Windows Home Server Code Name “Vailâ€). Affordable and easy-to-use, Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS) is the ideal solution to help families keep their important digital files and PC’s automatically backed up, organized, and accessible.

The Release Candidate (RC) signifies our last mile efforts for releasing this product to our customers, and prepares our network of software and hardware partners for its release. Along with the RC, we have also released an update to theWindows Server Solutions SDK which provides tools and information to develop add-ins and extend the functionality of Windows Home Server 2011.

This WHS RC is the first public release to include changes in the storage features, so let’s look at some of the changes you can expect. All existing technologies such as server and client backup, health monitoring, remote web access, streaming media, and simplified dashboard management are still included.

A new Move Folder Wizard makes it easy for you to move data from one drive to another. As Hard Drives are added to the Home Server, your health alerts will notify you that a new Hard Drive is available. From here, you can automatically format and configure the new drive for additional storage.

Nice thank you! I knew Net Admin class paid off. Because i was such a n00b to servers till I had to pass his server test, install it, manage it, troubleshoot it, fix it, call MS for support. Then take the windows server test.

And this still feels like yesterday

Not listening to what your customers wanted - Drive Extender/Media Center capabilities amongst others!

thanks

without drive extender this is not really a "home" server. How many home users want to deal with RAID and manual folder duplication?

Sounds like a traditional bag of MS hurt - really, anything that involves "Home" and "Wizards", coming out of MS, is a formula for massive brain damage and hurt. It's like they are still throwing money at trying to bring out BOB under some new name...

Most people really do not need massive home servers, when really, a router with an NAS, and some decent software for backing up data, would entirely do. Backup is something else MS has never been accomplished at, and perhaps they just shouldn't bother with any of this stuff that they are just god-awful at.

Yea, I was debating holding off on setting up my home server till I was that it does not have drive extender and they cut the WMC interface.

I have read several articles on the whole why no drive extender (basically comes down to this is built off Server 2008 R2 and it is being developed along side SBS and WSS and was causing too many problems). Stupid of them to build 2 totally seperate server needs off the same platform.

As for the no WMC stuff, that is just a dumb decision.

I went ahead and got WHS and am using that.
The drive pooling looks interesting and may be an OK solution to not having DE (unless you have huge folders).

I may give it a try just to see how it works, since I just got my WHS v1 going, I have not really fouond out what all it can do. Only thing is with a RC, Your gonna get screwed once the actual release comes out since you probably will not be able to "upgrade" the RC, so you will need to do a fresh install and loose all the data.

I admit WHSv1 had some major problems when it came out (data loss bug) but now it is pretty polished and with a plethora of addins WHSv1 is very versatile. As far as WHS 2011 not including a WMC server and Drive Extender ruin what could have been a great upgrade.

Have you used it?

Many people do need a home server and not realize it. Centralized media, automated backup, easy redundancy, media steamer, etc with an easy interface.

MS dropped the ball on not include Media Center and removing DE. I was looking foward to this. MS should ship this out as Windows Small Business Server 2011 and add at least the option for DE in WHS 2011.
Once again...

Yup. I did not realize how easy WHS makes having a complete backup of everything. My HTPC was my main storage before for movies, but I have now taken the 500gb drive out of it that was used for TV show recording and will be taking the 640 out soon and using them on my WHS (which is why DE is so nice, I can add all different size drives and they just work).

Many people feel the same way. Just scrap the current Fail (oops, I mean Vail, that is just too coincidental), release SBS and WSS and fix WHS to how it should be.

Have you installed WMC connect for whs and on the media center as it will automatically copy newly recorded tv shows over to the recorded TV folder automatically.
Also if you havent tried it restoring a PC from the home server takes anywhere from 10-30minutes until the machine is just like it was before the HDD failure. IF your running 64bit windows 7 make sure you download vista 32bit drivers for the network card, since win7 64 bit drivers that are in the driver recovery wont work for the boot disk.
