Laptop CPU Idles 85°C

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

My dads laptop's CPU idles at 85°C It's a HP Compaq 6820s.

I'm trying to get it open as we speak, but does anyone have any ideas why this is ? The sensors aren't broken, the laptop actually feels hot, the fan ramps right up to max and dust is within limits. Ambient is 20°C and airflow isn't (visually) obstructed. Load temps go over TJ Max, so I instantly shut down Prime 95. I used Realtemp to check temps. BIOS is unchanged from the start.

I'm guessing it doesn't need its TIM replaced either since that doesn't happen suddenly or lowers the temp with ... 40°C I think something solid inside broke.

I'll keep you updated until I have an actual question, in other words, when I managed to open up the laptop...

you wont know till you open it up and find out.... replacing the tim cant hurt thats for sure.

I had this problem with a laptop recently, really high temps, blew the vents with canned air, didn't help, so it seemed like nothing was obstructing the airflow. However I ended up opening it up, and inbetween the fan and the heatsink was like a 1cm thick wall of dust that didnt break up when you used air, was like a carpet haha, cleaned it all out and replaced the tim. Now the laptop loads at like 55c : )

Unfortunately, that depends on the specific laptop model of a specific brand.
There is no general steps for taking apart laptops really

Okay guys, Update, there was a wall of dust between the fan and the heatsink, + the thermal paste was loose. I'm going to apply new thermal paste and dust everything out

Thanks for the ideas and the help !

EDIT : Idle temps are around 45°C now Load is 65°C
