What Graphics Card should I upgrade? - Page 2

Wow, a Geforce 2 still working..

Do you people seriously think his PSU is going to be able to power a 6800, let alone a 7800?

That system is extremely outdated. It would be much better for you to invest in a more dated build(Duo, Quad).

as others have said, just save for a new system. AGP is dead, the newer GFX cards are PCI-E only and you won't find an AGP slot on any newer motherboards.

Like everyone else says, that system is just so outdated I wouldn't bother upgrading the card. However if you could find something like one of these in AGP on the "Used" market for real cheap it would make a very big upgrade (still not very powerful but much more than what you have):

nvidia: Geforce 6600GT, any 6800, 7600GT, 7800GS
ati: 9500Pro, 9700, 9800, x800-series

Any thing higher-end than these (Radeon 1950Pro AGP, for example) would likely be very bottlenecked by your CPU.

At least w/these I mentioned for you above, you'd be able to play DX9 games from the 2004-2006 era okay ... stuff like Far Cry, Doom 3, Half Life 2, Prey, CounterStrike would run fine. Even most of the newest games will run on them, but you'd just have to use the lowest gfx settings in most cases.

But considering how cheaply one can pick up a motherboard and chip with PCI-Ex on it, I'd suggest that route. I see deals at Fry's (a local retailer) where they have lower-end board/chip combo's for like $60 that are like 4x faster than what you have now at least (although you'd need RAM also). And PCI-Ex gfx cards are MUCH more powerful for the same money vs. AGP cards ... again, unless you get a great deal on a used AGP card.
