My OCZ Power Supply Exploded!

Thread Starter
Yeah. It exploded.

Last night I was doing some web browsing, nothing running that would stress my system in any way, and I start to hear a fan make a funny noise. I thought it was the fan on my 5850, so I jumped into CCC to try and see my temps and turn it down. The temps were normal, and right when I clicked apply on the new fan speed setting, I hear this loud POP sound coming from my computer, and everything shuts off, im unable to boot, and there is black smoke billowing out of my PSU.

I took the psu out of my computer, which was extremely hot to the touch, still smoking, and making my house reak of smoke, and stuck it into the garage.

The fact that the PSU is fried isn't my problem, I'm worried about the REST of my system. Could this POS power supply have gone kamikaze and taken my baby down with it!? mad.gif

Right now I don't have another PSU to test my rig. I'm going to make a trip to Fry's later today and pick up a corsair PSU.

Also, does anyone have any experience with OCZ technical service? Does their warranty cover damage to other parts if its caused by their product?

Thanks everyone.

Its possible that the PSU took down the rest of the system by sending a last big wave of power. I guess a new PSU would be the best thing you can do now...well that and praying, that your components are alright.

Well, while possible, highly unproboble. OCZ isnt the best brand but nowhere near the worst, its on the same level as coolermaster, so the odds of it killing EVERYTHING are less than say a raidmax or sunbeam.

I had an ocz power supply burn up on me too, thankful it didn't damage up any of my other component. I almost positive that ocz does not cover other damaged components...

Typically, if it's a loud pop, the rest of your stuff is fine. It's when there is no loud pop that there is more reason to worry.

There's nothing to take pictures of. I'm not going to crack it open because I don't want to void the warranty, and you cant see where it burnt out through the housing.

Thing still smells like crazy though. Just tried to jump it with a paper clip, no go.
