As for thoughts about it? It's basically designed for netbooks/touchscreens IMO. I'm pretty sure Windows and OSX is going to follow this design soon too, or at least make it part of the to be released operating systems.

transhour: How is this a Mac clone? Mac is more like having Gnome2 + dock, it's not really going in this direction yet. And yes, I know this because I run 10.6.6 =P and I actually think the linux dock systems are better. LOL They have more features and are easier to customize.
unity and gnome3 are different, the gnome3 shell looks similar to unity tho, but ubuntu will swear it is not the gnome3 shell there was some sort of disagreement between ubuntu and the gnome team, and shuttleworth decided to ax gnome as the default desktop in favor of unity.

@mushroomboy: dunno, it just looks and feels mac'ish to me. i've thought this since 10.04 when they switched which side the buttons were on

i know there is more to mac-ness than which side the windows button are on, but it is a start

and the dock's drive me nuts, drove me crazy in mac osx due to lack of features and customization, in windows it was tough to find a decent one, in linux, there are dozens, each doing a different thing, with tons of customization and features that aren't in the windows or mac one, but it wasn't unified enough for me to see any benefit to it.

not used it but what i have read and seen in vids makes me not like it.

i preferred the old netbook UI. it was clean and simple. Unity is a bit too closed down for my taste. that and i've never really been a fan of docks

this.

i haven't liked the direction Ubuntu has been going as of late. have they implemented the windicators yet or?

I didn't like the direction of Ubuntu after 9.04. That's why I still have it installed for dual booting.

Same here, I rather have my Taskbar any day.

I did try Docky & Rocketdock but that was just for customization and looks but once I was done making it look nice and took my screenshot I closed it and never used it.

Really, so Unity is not Gnome-Shell.... Well I'll be, I swore it was the same thing originally. I'm guessing they just took Gnome-Shell and modified it... =P

As for the mac stuff, I think the Unity/Shell face is going more towards what Windows is doing. They (windows) already set up the taskbar in a way that enables them to go that route. Replacing the name based taskbar with an Icon based one (Mac-ish but you could say Apple merged the quick launch with the taskbar from MS) and merging the quick launch. This will let them set up exactly what Unity/Shell is doing in the future. I think they are all heading this way because of touch screens/pads.

I really think there is a huge difference between what Mac is doing and what Windows is doing. Mac basically made the task bar a quick launch with icons, and then making the minimize feature a mini-screenshot of the program. I would say windows has a more integrated method, merging everything.

i know that unity and the gnome3 shell look a lot alike, but like i said according to shuttleworth and the ubuntu dev team, they don't share the same code base...they just look alike. i thought they were the same thing tbh with you but what looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, in the ubuntu world isn't a duck, its a cat.

for me to say i hate win7's taskbar would be an outright lie, it is the one thing i absolutely love about it even tho they "copied" the concept, i do agree they did a far superior job in its implementation than mac doc did, is it something i want in linux? no, i want something different, linux has and always will be about innovation, and unity/gnome3 shell is that, but i also at the same time love what KDE is doing.

i know each OS will "steal" from each other, it is inevitable, i just don't want them cloning each other thats all

this thing is exactly why im not planning to use any main ubuntu spins in the future :/ the biggest thing that kills the latest version of gnome AND unity, is that compiz fusion and beryl dont work with it at all

ill probably end up going fedora kde only or something, been trying it lately, gotta say i definitely dont mind kde as much as i thought... depends if i can force things to work or not

either that, or ill just hop on the mint band wagon with a different DE

PS: i hope this kills ubuntu a little bit so other great linux desktops can get some spot light
Kinda meh now...

I am normally a Arch user but put Ubuntu on my main rig for just ease of use. To be honest I don't like any of this stuff and Unity reminds much more of Windows 7 sidebar more then a Mac. Which I have all that crap disabled anyways. I guess I just need to go back to Xubuntu instead.

i dont get it

i have no problem with the single top bar and doc look really, but why complain about it then do it yourself?
