They're highly rated, unobtrusive, and right at that price range.

Those are some VERY nice speakers. Though you REALLY would need a SUB to fill in the bottom end.

But if you got their $1100.00 system with the 8" sub i believe you would be golden.

HOWEVER, please do not buy the PSW505 sub. I bought it thinking it was an upgrade from my previous sub (a $90 yamaha) and it was not. It was muddy and just not musical-sounding. Go for a better sub to really let that system shine. My HSU sub is fantastic.
Agreed I love polks but their subs suck.

Front:

Polk Monitor 70's x2

Center:

Polk CS2

Surrounds:

Polk Monitor 40's x4

Sub:

Polk PSW505
If you are not in a large space 7.1 is way overkill. 90% of it is fake since not many movies have a 7.1 track. Again polk subs suck. If your tv is wallmounted grab a 3rd 70 for the center. I had/have 2 monitor 50's as fronts with a cs10 (the polk recommended center) and it is not collecting dust as I replaced it with a 3rd 50.

Like I saw others say check avsforum too.

I would definitely recommend an Energy RC system over the Polk system, especially considering how cheap you can get them now. I've had a pair of RC-10s for my computer system along with an Orb Audio sub and they've been great. I recently got an RC-LCR and a pair of RC-50s for movies and the consoles and I am extremely happy with them.

Polk subs are poo. Energy subs are decent enough, but you need to be looking at subs from HSU, eD, SVS, Epik, Funkywaves, Rythmik, among others. They all have several models available and pricing ranges from inexpensive to fairly expensive, but they all have a good performance to dollar ratio. If you are only looking to spend $200 or so on a sub the list posted by Invidiafanboy is good, although I'd add the Dayton SUB-120 on parts-express to the list.

Other speakers worth looking at:
Infinity P362, PC250 or PC350 center, and P162 or P152 bookshelves should be available for really nice prices.
